Fans get to see Grammy winner belt out rock songs at intermediate school!

Double Grammy-winning Aucklander Lorde was clearly born to be a superstar — and now you can see where it all started for the North Shore native.

A flashback video of the 17-year-old singing with her Belmont Intermediate School band Extreme has clocked up more than 400,000 views on Youtube. The footage, from 2009, when Lorde was just 12 years old, shows the young band playing a number of classic rock songs in the school’s Battle of the Bands competition.

It may be a rather different sound for the “Royals” singer, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O’Connor, but her mass of dark curls is unmissable. The video surfaced in November, but has received a serious boost in views since the singer-songwriter won her two Grammys last month.

Lorde’s band placed third in the competition.

Co-manager Scott MacLachlan discovered Lorde from a video of the young singer performing a cover of Duffy’s “Warwick Avenue” in a school talent show.
