The Brooklyn-born, Los Angeles-based 29-year-old Bebe Rexha burst onto the scene in 2013 when she penned the song ‘Monster’, which became a worldwide hit for Eminem and Rihanna. Today, only months following her debut album release ‘Expectations‘, it’s clear that Bebe is only just getting started.

Her most recent single ‘I’m a Mess‘ details the all-too-real scenario of being so desperately in love that it brings about parts of ourselves that are less than perfect. Bebe, who’s spoken out in the past on her anxiety, touches on obsession, embarrassment and loneliness, and yet affirms that despite all of those hard-hitting and relatable emotions, that she’s going to get through and a have a good life anyway (cheers to that!).

What’s your story? How did you get to where you are today?
My love for music started when I was 4 years old and I grew up with music in my household. I started playing the trumpet and taught myself how to play piano. Then I found my love for songwriting which opened a lot of doors for me in my artist career. I’ve been very lucky to work with several artists and collaborators

When did you know you wanted to work in the music industry?
I knew that I had a love for music and I wanted people to hear my songs. In order for people be in the music business, I knew I needed to do this when I was about 15 or 16, that’s when I started networking with people in the industry.

What are some of your most memorable collaborations? And if you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
‘Me, Myself & I’ with G-Eazy. This was my first big collaborative moment. Kanye West or  Beyoncè – I love how they both take risks and try new sounds.

When can we expect you back in New Zealand?
Maybe next year!

Can you share what it’s been like being a female working in this industry?
I think for females it gets hard because we have to live up to standards of what society thinks we should look like. You’re in the spotlight at all times which has you question yourself a lot. That’s why it’s really important for me to promote self-love and supporting other females to my fans.

How would you describe your biggest strength as an artist?
I think my biggest strength as an artist is my songwriting.

What motivates you to get up on days you’d rather just stay in bed?
My fans and a really good cup of coffee.

Do you have favourite quote or mantra to live by?
In the end everything will be ok, and if it’s not ok, it’s not the end

How would you describe your style?
Eclectic and based off of my mood. I’m inspired by old Hollywood and rock ‘n’ roll.

What’s your go-to outfit when you need to feel confident?
A pair of black leggings, high heels, and a leather jacket.

Sleep and water.

What would your last meal on earth be?
Chicken parm.

Where in the world have you always wanted to travel to?
Japan.

What’s something people don’t know about you? Any hidden talents or party tricks?
I can play the trumpet.

And the ultimate goal?
To buy my parents a house.
