Storm’s general manager Deborah Caldwell shares her love of shopping in the latest ‘it’ destination – Stockholm.
Why do you love Stockholm?
It’s a relatively small city that’s made up of lots of little islands all connected by bridges. It’s so easy to walk around that, even on your first visit, it doesn’t take long to get your bearings so you feel like a local in no time.
What are your three must-dos?
Go to the old town, Gamla Stan, to appreciate the history and architecture. Go shopping – Swedish style is iconic. And get lost, as it’s the best way to really experience the city.
Where’s best for people watching?
Anywhere around Sergel Torg square is a hotspot for watching both tourists and locals. Unlike other European cities, you don’t see many locals relaxing on the streets. The parks and cafés are the only places they sit to watch the world go by and this is only ever in summer. It’s too cold in winter to be outside.
How do your trips to Stockholm inspire you?
I think Stockholm has perfected the art of pared-back styling and the city is a hub for Swedish fashion labels that are unheard-of in New Zealand. When in town, I look at what the Swedes are creating in both fashion and interiors – their shop fit-outs impress and inspire me.
Where do you shop?
Acne’s boutiques are a must-visit if you’re a fan of their clothing. I love the brand’s classic styles and the prices are more affordable in their hometown. Acne also has a more extensive range in Stockholm’s boutiques, so you can pick up a find that isn’t available online or through international stockists. Department store NK is comparable to Galeries Lafayette in Paris so, regardless of whether you’re in Stockholm to see the sights or shop, NK is a must-see. It’s made up of lots of little local designer stores and fantastic make-up and fragrance brands.
What’s your favourite bar?
In summer, F12 Terrassen is an al fresco bar that takes over the steps of one of Stockholm’s best restaurants. For a night out make sure you dress to impress so you can mingle with the effortlessly cool locals – and be warned, don’t show up before midnight! If you’re there in winter, I’d recommend Riche – it’s a Stockholm institution.
Where do you go for coffee?
There are so many cute cafés around the city, I haven’t had a bad coffee there yet. Stick to local cafés and bakeries – coffee is a noun and a verb in Stockholm, with locals basing themselves in coffee shops to work and socialise all day over coffee and pastries.
Where do you like to eat?
I love Vapiano when I’m in Europe. It’s an Italian eatery where they cook the food in front of you. It’s fresh, delicious and affordable. If you’re after a unique culinary experience that’s true to Stockholm, you can’t go past Frantzén. With two Michelin stars and just 19 seats, dining there is a must for foodies.
Best place to stay?
I stay at the Radisson Blu Waterfront which is close to the main train station. It’s central and near the two main shopping hubs. Miss Clara by Nobis is beautiful. Nobis Hotels are iconic for their architecture and pared-back interiors, which make the rooms feel like home. They are the perfect place to relax after a big day and night of exploring.
