At the end of a long winding road into the Himalayan mountains of Uttarakhand, India lies the village of Govindghat. It is a quiet, shadowed settlement that serves as the gateway to two very sacred and special natural spaces. From here, every visitor must continue on foot, ascending steadily for two days to reach their destination. One path leads to Hemkund Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site, the other to the UNESCO World Heritage [Site] Valley of the Flowers [National Park].
What I hadn’t known on arrival was that while I would be walking toward the Valley of Flowers, hundreds of Sikh pilgrims would be journeying alongside me, bound for Hemkund to honour Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the natural world surrounding the high-altitude temple. The trail was alive with energy, bright turbans, vivid saris, and the hum of devotion. Hardly anyone wore outdoor gear; at one point, I even passed a man in a suit. Horses, porters, seekers, and monkeys walked the path, making for an unexpectedly colourful and lively day of hiking.
The following morning told a different story. Leaving camp early, I found myself almost alone on the trail to the Valley of Flowers. The silence was striking after the previous day’s steady movement. I remember wondering: Is this valley truly as magical as its name suggests? Where 180 was everyone else?
Climbing higher and higher, stone steps leading me through gaps in the mountains, I began to see the landscape open. At first, just hints, a soft blush of pink drifting across the green slopes. Step by step, the vision unfolded: a wide valley of waterfalls tumbling from cloud-tipped peaks, meadows painted with wildflowers, and mist weaving between the ridges.
At last, I understood. This was the Valley of Flowers, sitting at around 3400 metres above sea level, bursting with rare flora, wildlife, and colours that no photograph or description could capture fully. It was everything its name promised: magical, otherworldly, and deeply alive. A place to spend many hours just soaking in the beauty.
