Home-grown golden-girl Georgia Alice Currie earned one more major fashion stripe last night when she was named the Emerging Designer of the Year at the Elle Australia Style Awards. Only in their second year, the Elle Australia Style Awards are a celebration of Australasian style, where the success of local fashion designers, influencers and icons is recognised in the presence of key fashion industry insiders. Held at The Mint in Sydney’s CBD, last night’s attendees included Chanel Iman, Nicole Trunfio, Margaret Zhang, and Nicole Warne, all of whom saw Georgia beat out the other finalists in her category to take home the top honour.

The young New Zealand designer’s star has steadily risen ever since she founded her “luxury streetwear” label, Georgia Alice, in 2012. By mid-2014 she had four RTW collections to her name, and that same year she won a $10,000 DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship, which has since enabled her to grow her brand internationally, whilst continuing to release two collections per year.

All of this has seen her cultivate quite the celeb following. Not only are her designs a favourite amongst celebrities and fashion bloggers down under, she’s also caught the attention of Man Repeller blogger, Leandra Medine, and more recently Solange Knowles, who this September ‘grammed a photo of herself wearing Georgia Alice’s ‘Marooned’ gather dress to NYFW. A stunned Georgia regrammed the pic the next morning, the caption “omgomgomg” summarising how it must feel to wake up and see Beyoncé’s sister repping your clothes. Georgia was quite literally speechless when, a few days later, Queen B herself posted Solange’s pic to her own Instagram account for all 50 million of her followers to see.

Fashion Quarterly has been Georgia Alice obsessed since day one. To date we have dressed two of our cover girls in the label (Avril wore a Georgia Alice ‘Marooned’ top on the cover of FQ summer 2014, and Elodie wore a Georgia Alice ‘Priest’ shirt on the cover of FQ Life), and even had Georgia herself star in our FQ.CO.NZ “fashion has a new home” campaign. We always thought she was one to watch, and now, along with the rest of the fashion world, we can’t look away.
