Because sometimes sleepwear is just ~too~ good to stay in the bedroom.

One of the more appealing aspects of summer coinciding with our longest break for the year is the ability to begin and end our days lounging in lightweight cotton pjs that are equally suitable for the beach as they are a short jaunt to the corner dairy.

And as effortless as this custom sounds, few brands have cemented themselves in the wardrobes and weekenders of Kiwis like New Zealand luxury sleepwear brand General Sleep.  Having recently launched a limited release of colourways – pink gingham, apple green and lilac – to bring us closer to our jovial string of days off, we speak with owner Louise Halse on why General Sleep’s latest collection is even sweeter in real life.

“We have utilised brighter tones to reflect the positive summer mood at this time of year – it’s always such a joy to wear colour to festive events, the beach, and summer barbecues so this was a consideration in the palette for this collection.”

For Louise, who took over the reins of the brand in 2021, unwrapping new pj’s on Christmas morning is one her most fond childhood memories. “Given it’s the festive season, we’ve also made this collection at a special price point for gifting.”

General Sleep’s signature light-weight organic cotton sets have won over the hearts of those looking to invest in timeless and versatile separates that get better with each wear. When designing the ideal summer sleepwear, Louise says that there are a number of attributes to consider.

“Summer sleepwear needs to allow you to move and not feel restricted. The fabric should help with body temperature regulation and feel beautiful on the skin.”

Besides their inherent quality and longevity, General Sleep’s use of organic cotton has also been a sought-after hallmark.

“Our customers have likened our sleepwear to finding their favourite pair of jeans: they’re comfortable, they look great and they just want the same again. To us, this is such a compliment and something we’ll continue to strive for.”

With limited colourways being dropped throughout the year, friends of the brand know that there’s a sense of urgency that comes with each collection. For Louise, this minimalist approach allows them to remain true to their sustainable beginnings.

“We like the idea of having a small collection where people who have the pieces know that there are only a handful of other people out there with the same ones.”

“I love how a beautiful pair of pyjamas can make you feel so excited for bedtime and play a role as part of the evening ritual, helping oneself to wind down and prepare for sleep.”

“I personally love the lilac Summer Set – it’s the ideal set for keeping cool and comfortable over the summer holidays when the evenings are balmy and the mornings are sunny and slow.  It can easily be thrown on over togs for a day at the beach and the camisole or shorts can worn out and about as separates for the ultimate versatility.  And the lilac colour is just gorgeous.” – Louise Halse, owner of General Sleep
