Five trends we noted from New York Fashion Week

While the who’s who of the fashion industry flooded New York city, what we’re most interested in is the trends….

New York was abuzz last week with models, influencers, buyers and editors all keen to see what is on the cards for Spring/Summer 2023. And while we saw a lot of looks, five trends stood out. Naturally, a few of them are still turning to the noughties for inspiration – think cargo pants reimagined and the old favourite bubble skirt. Read on to find out more…

Bubble Hems

It looks like that Y2K style that’s so prevalent right now is not going to stop until every last trend has been reimagined. Case in point – the return of the bubble hem. Now, fans of The Hills may remember this one as it was a wardrobe staple for LC and the gang.  But right now the voluminous, balloon-like silhouette has had an update on the catwalk by the likes Ulla Johnson and Proenza Schouler, while Dauphinette took it to a whole new level.

3D floral

Will we ever get bored of floral? It appears not. But the array of botanicals we saw on the catwalks of New York were practically blooming off the fabric. Designers seemed to be taking their penchant for floral prints a step further, by changing up the ordinary (and very much overdone) 2D prints and making them 3D. We saw floral appliques and sculptural flowers from Carolina Herrera to Prabal Gurung. And honestly, it feels like a fresh take on an old favourite.

Cargo Pants

I’m not sure how to break this news – but it’s official – cargo pants are back. The good news is that not only are they much more sophisticated, but the utilitarian garment has had a glow up. This means instead of durable material we know them for, we saw the style in silk, velvets and even organza. I guess the good news is you’ll have no shortage of pockets…

See through

Sheer styles were seen in a multitude of shows – from the white sheer overdress at Tory Burch, to the completely see-through yellow dress at Jason Wu. Whether they were loose-fitting or snug, these skin-baring styles gave an ultra cool ‘I don’t care what anyone thinks’ vibe – and we’re loving it.

Fringing

Fringing has never looked so chic. At NYFW we saw fringing positively dripping with embellishments of crystal and beading making sure no wild west connotations were conjured up. There is something whimsical about the way the fringed pieces sashayed down the catwalk whether it was a dress, skirt, or bodysuit. This playful detail simply screamed fun. It’s meant to be the roaring 20’s after all… isn’t it?
