If you’re a guy, or know a guy that likes to take risks when it comes to style, leave your laptop screen open on this page and let him get amongst Slaeve and Jordan Holliday. Both designers showcased their AW 16 collections as part of NZFW’s New Generation show and it’s safe to say they’re all about streetwear – it’s just streetwear not for the faint of heart.
Slaeve models stormed the catwalk in skirts – skirts for men. Knee-length jersey fabrics and tube-style shin-grazing pieces that were styled so perfectly, a skirt on a man has never felt so right. Layering was paramount throughout the show; knee-length shorts worn over leggings worn over socks worn with Docs. And best of all, it was all worn with attitude, which any man wearing a skirt will tell you, is imperative.
Similarly with Jordan Holliday’s offering, men’s fashion was given a shakeup, with fur trimmed coats and high-waisted pants that were so high, there was not a six-pack to be seen.
Shirt sleeves that almost swept the floor made quite a statement while jumpsuits, tunics and sandals (still for men), were so well structured they could almost be made of origami. My pick (because who doesn’t love borrowing from the boyfriend’s wardrobe) was a long grey coat that I want to wrap myself up in on a Sunday while sitting in the sun with a takeaway coffee and the paper.
But New Gen wasn’t all about the men. Australian label Third Form presented stunning pieces that would see you right all through winter. Cropped organza flares perfect for layering, leather flares made even flarier (it’s a word) with unzipped invisible zips and an eye-catching orange dress which was the standout amongst the black and white colour palette of the rest of the collection.
Texture was key here, with contrasting fabrics used throughout; a leather panel on a silk dress, sheer organza with more structured suiting and a ribbed material that perfectly draped over the body.
The take-home from Third Form? Flares are here to stay, so welcome them into your wardrobe with open arms.
