La Marée brings French finesse to Auckland’s waterfront, pairing New Zealand's best seafood with Provençal flair and a view that does half the talking.

There are few better places to watch Auckland shift into spring than the water’s edge at Viaduct Harbour, and fewer still where you can do it with a glass of chilled wine and something exceptional in front of you.

La Marée, meaning ‘the tide’ in French, is Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour‘s waterfront restaurant, an airy, light-filled space that seems to move with the harbour just beyond its windows. Here, the refinement of French cuisine meets New Zealand produce, and the result feels less like fusion and more like a conversation between two coastal cultures.

The menu leans into the country’s best seafood and seasonal ingredients, run through classic French technique until dishes feel both familiar and entirely new. Chargrilled octopus arrives bright with citrus and Espelette spice, a nod to the French coastline. The Bouillabaisse de la Marée goes further still, a Provençal saffron broth finished with Waiheke Island Chardonnay and loaded with blue shell mussels, pāua and Cloudy Bay clams — a dish making a case for itself without needing much explanation.

At the helm is Executive Chef Maninder Singh Panesar, known around the kitchen as Chef Mani. His path from commis chef (an entry-level chef) to executive chef has taken the better part of a decade, and it shows in the way he cooks, thoughtful, seasonal, unafraid to draw on influences from home and abroad. It’s cooking with real intention, and it’s made La Marée one of the more compelling tables on the Auckland waterfront.

And the setting? That’s just as divine. Outdoor seating catches the sun along the cove, while inside, a layered onyx wall glows warm against the harbour light. A space built for more than one kind of occasion, celebrations, long lunches, the dinner you’ve been meaning to book for months. There’s a touch of the Côte d’Azur in it, transplanted to the Viaduct without losing what makes it distinctly Auckland.
