Produced in partnership with Black Grace.
Described by The New York Times as having “exhilarating, seemingly inexhaustible energy”, Black Grace features some of Aotearoa’s finest contemporary and traditional Pacific dancers, led by Founding Artistic Director Neil Ieremia (ONZM).
In its 27th year, Black Grace is returning to the United States to premiere two new works ‘O Le Olaga (Life)’ and ‘Fatu’, before bringing these contemporary masterpieces to Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch in September.
O Le Olaga (Life) is set to a reimagining of Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria in D Major, being a tribute to Ieremia’s parents and ultimately a celebration of life. Fatu is a work inspired by renowned visual artist Fatu Akelei Feu’u (ONZM), accompanied by a soundtrack that is part live, part recorded.
Both works are an emotive portrayal of Ieremia’s rich creativity, sophistication, and unique ability to create innovative choreography that breaks down social, cultural, and generational barriers.
Performances are being held in Auckland (Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Aotea Centre) on 4 September, Wellington (Opera House) on 6 September, and Christchurch (James Hay Theatre) on 10 September.
