Trend report: lips

The trends, innovations, shades and treatments to keep your pout looking pretty.

We’re officially calling it – no-makeup makeup is taking a back seat this winter and colour is at the wheel. And the best part? A bright lip no longer needs to feel OTT; this time it’s all about texture.

From matte to stains, blurring, high shine and classic cream finishes, there’s no shortage of formulas to suit whatever occasion you’re puckering up for. The weather may be cooling down, but lips are coming in hot!

wet and forget

1. Wet and forget

Staining your lips with colour is the ultimate in low-maintenance beauty. Simply swipe it on and forget about it. MAC Versicolour is the latest in stain technology, which combines a gloss and stain to tint lips with colour for up to four hours.

Shine on

2. Shine on

Just because matte is in, it doesn’t mean shine is out. But if you’re going to do shine, shine bright! High shine texture is the talk of the town – so keep your lips the focus and layer on lashings of kissable sheen.

1. Osmosis Colour Lip Glaze in Desire, $49.50. 2. Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in Tiara, $59. 3. RMS Lip Shine in Royal, $44, from Mecca Cosmetica.

Simply red

3. Simply red

“This season, colour is making a comeback and we are decorating our lips in bold cherry tones. Whether it’s a bright pink-based red, an electric tomato red or a burnt coral red, customise your lip colour to suit your style,” says MAC senior makeup artist Kiekie Stanners.

Flat out

To make the most of the matte lip, keep the rest of your makeup minimal. A matte finish can take a bit of getting used to, but it’s the easiest way to update your look for winter without veering too left of centre.
