I flew into Queenstown for Audi’s Ice Experience — two days of frozen tracks, snow-dusted mountains, and early starts — but it was The Rees Hotel that gave the weekend its balance.
My base was an Executive Lake View One Bedroom Apartment. Generous in scale, refined in detail, and quietly indulgent, it felt more like a private residence than a hotel suite. With a full kitchen, a lounge made for lingering, and floor-to-ceiling glass framing Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, it’s the sort of space that begs to be shared. Perfect for a couple escaping for a winter weekend, or a family wanting room to spread out. Travelling solo, it was a rare luxury that felt almost too generous — in the best possible way. Two blue bird days only sharpened the scene, the peaks glittering and the lake shimmering like glass.
My schedule meant I was out before sunrise and out for dinner both nights, but the return was always the reward: gas fire on, tea in hand.
Design is central to The Rees’ story. Interiors were created with Arrowtown’s Cruikshank Furniture, whose bespoke craftsmanship brings a sense of longevity and legacy. The look is elegant and modern yet rooted in Queenstown’s pioneering heritage. Paired with the terraced architecture, each apartment feels both private and deeply connected to its surroundings — luxury that’s thoughtful rather than showy.
Though I didn’t have time to explore them, The Rees offers much more: the award-winning True South Dining Room, a curated wine cellar, private jetty, and dedicated ski concierge — the sort of facilities that make it consistently rank among New Zealand’s best.
Location is another win: minutes from the airport, close to Queenstown’s buzz, and a short drive to Arrowtown or Ayrburn. Convenient, yet quietly removed — a rare balance in a town that rarely slows down.
Even on a fast-paced weekend, The Rees managed to slow things down. Next time, I’ll return with company — and enough time to enjoy everything I missed.
