As we welcome the change of season, it’s also time to usher in the return of the Mary Jane – the sophisticated older sibling of the ballet flat. Having come and gone from popularity over the years, the iconic style has recently reappeared on the fashion forefront. While they might be reminiscent of school days for many of us, the enduring allure of Mary Janes lies in their versatility – capable of looking Parisian, preppy, or punk — depending on how they’re styled. Featuring on the runways at Versace, The Row, and Bottega Veneta, it seems like every designer is releasing their own take on the Mary Jane this season. Whether you prefer a functional flat or err towards a heel, we’ve rounded up the seven best styles to step into this winter.

Mi Piaci Lilibet Platform, $300

Offering a contemporary take on the classic Mary Jane silhouette, this chunky platform pair exudes a punky edge. For the cooler months, style them with a simple black tight or a dainty ankle sock to keep the chill at bay.

Paloma Wool Prima Sandal, $380

Indulge your inner Prima Ballerina with this twee pink pair from Spanish label Paloma Wool. Made from reflective satin, you can mix and match these with tailored suiting and floral dresses alike.

Dr. Martens 8065 Mary Jane, $299

We all know and love Dr. Martens’ classic lace ups with their signature yellow stitching and air-cushioned soles but what about the brand’s Mary Jane styles? Retaining the DNA of traditional Dr. Martens, this chunky double-strap pair make for a durable staple to see you through the wetter months.

Charles & Keith Beaded Chain-Link Mary Janes, $113

Provide a touch of class to any ensemble with this elegant monochrome pair by Charles and Keith. Between their two-toned colour scheme and delicate pearl embellishments, this block-toe style harnesses a Chanel aesthetic at an accessible price point.

Versace Medusa Aevitas Platform Pumps, $1,300

Take your shoe game to new heights (literally) with these sky-high platforms by Versace. With their 6.5 inch heels and signature Medusa hardware, you’ll make a bold statement in every room you walk into.

Andrea Biani Fiyona Patent Heel, $239.95

No repertoire is complete without a dependable cream shoe. Polished and pragmatic, this dual buckle pair could easily earn a spot in our winter workwear rotation.

The Row Ava Leather Flats, $1,316

Staying true to The Row’s ‘less is more’ aesthetic, this pared back, Parisian-style pair is a  timeless choice. Elegant, but not overly precious, they make for a suitable companion to your favourite straight leg jeans or a simple black skirt.
