Hair this season is all about striking the balance between polish and ease with an effortless, cool-girl confidence that looks undone yet considered. As Sasha Lenski, founder and lead stylist at Lenski salon in Auckland’s Parnell, puts it, “Summer hair feels relaxed but deliberate. We’re moving towards low-maintenance styles that embrace natural texture with soft layers, shaggy shapes, and face-framing fringes.”
It’s less about transformation and more about intention, working with your hair, not against it. Stylists are fielding requests for sun-softened, natural tones and cuts with movement, which allow for less styling and an easy but elevated vibe. This freedom and finesse defines the current hair era and sets healthy, well-nourished locks as the ultimate goal.
Effortless layers, blunt ends, and modern movement
Cuts this season are ruled by the way they move, which Lenski says is all about “lots of layers, tousled and airy fringes.” Classic bobs continue to reign, but evolve into sleeker, more refined jawline versions that feel grown-up and modern.
Mathias Te Moananui, creative director at Buoy Salon & Spa in Wellington, agrees that layering is key but balance is everything. “Soft layering is huge right now, think Dakota Johnson or Hailey Bieber,” he says. “The ‘bixie’ (a bob-pixie hybrid) is also gaining traction, while extra-long hair still has its place, just with a blunter, more natural finish.”
Both stylists note that blunt bobs are transitioning into softer, more wearable shapes. For those growing out last year’s blunt bob, Lenski recommends refining the outline and adding subtle face-framing layers to keep structure intact as length returns.
“Let the front grow to your collarbone, then allow the rest to catch up,” advises Te Moananui. “It’s the best way to avoid that awkward inbetween stage.” Regular trims, silk pillowcases, and scalp-nourishing serums all help keep hair healthy during the grow-out phase.
Glossy, tonal, and health-led colour
“Colour this season is plush and tonal,” says Lenski. “Blondes are softening into creamier, more blended tones, like expensive champagne or golden shades that look both luxurious and natural. Brunettes are all about shine and gloss, from mocha mousse to sun-kissed caramel, with warm notes to catch that summer light.”
Suede brown, chocolate glaze, and smokey almond are a few more mouthwatering descriptions for the brunette tones this season, which lean more low-maintenance than ever before. This low-key colour look extends to blondes too, thanks to the comeback of cooler tones, and Te Moananui says he’s seeing clients embracing their natural highlights with grey blending, which gives a more elevated finish to natural growth.
Whatever your hue of choice, shine is a must, so using products with UV protection and opting for glossy treatments will help prevent colour from going dull in the sun. “For protection, hats are your best accessory and always cleanse hair thoroughly after swimming to remove metals and minerals,” adds Te Moananui.
Styling: Sleek vs soft movement
Summer styling splits into two distinct moods: the glossy minimalist and the undone romantic. “Wet-look slicked-back hair makes a bold statement for evening, while soft bends, gentle waves, and polished blowouts offer timeless, wearable texture for day,” explains Lenski.
Te Moananui agrees the focus has shifted away from “over-styled, high glam looks” in favour of understated chic. “The vibe is effortless,” he says. “Think barely there waves or straight, glassy finishes. The trend is healthy, natural, and touchable rather than set and sprayed.”
All about that scalp
Like the soil in your garden, the health of your scalp determines the integrity of your hair, which is why the skinification of haircare continues to dominate. Think of it as extending your skincare routine north, by adding in an exfoliating tonic or stimulating serum to nourish your roots and encourage shinier lengths in the process.
You can still keep things low maintenance though. A simple scalp massage and targeted serum once or twice a week (ideally timed with your wash days) is enough to boost circulation, lift product build-up, and nourish that often-forgotten patch of skin.
It’s one of those quiet rituals that fits neatly into the effortless but intentional mood defining summer 2026.
