Fashionable finds to keep your spirits high when the rain falls heavy on the roof.

Wet hems and soggy boots, sure this winter weather can weigh us down, but there’s plenty of ways to embrace this not-so-desirable weather. How, you ask? Some retail therapy and me-time is a great place to start!

Pour the tea

A warm and calming cup of tea always puts us at ease. This fine selection of boutique tea not only looks look great on the shelf, they each reveal some special benefits when steeped.

Floretique tea from Smith & Caughey’s – unfurls to reveal a real flower at the bottom of your cup.

Anxietea from Better Tea – wellness tea made in New Zealand to relax and restore.

Harney & Sons tea – we recommend the Hot Cinnamon for those with a sweet tooth.

Read a classic novel

Rainy days and long reads go together like the tea and cookies you should probably have beside you by now. If there isn’t much on your ‘must-read’ list at the moment, opt for a classic novel or novella  – they are so good, they can be devoured in a day.

The Picture of Dorian Gray – with Oscar Wilde’s signature slick wit and decadent writing, this book may be dark, but it’s also a delight.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Yes, it was a book first! Truman Capote’s novella is inspired by many of the socialites he ran circles with in 1950s New York. There are some major differences between the written version and the movie to still keep you guessing.

Frankenstein – Mary Shelley was all about the atmosphere with storms and wet weather earmarking major events in this gothic novel – get meta and read it when MetService forecasts for rain.

Light a candle

Whether or not you’re inspired by our gothic novel suggestions, candles are one way to add ambience and lift you out of the doom and gloom. Subtly subverted floral scents are now fresh.

Ecoya Caramelised Walnut & Amber candle – notes of amber, walnut, jasmine, cedarwood, cinnamon.

Meadowlark Rose Noir candle – notes of blackcurrant, bergamot, rose, lychee, davana, patchouli, musk, vanilla.

Nudesse Overose candle from Superette – notes of damask rose, petrichor.

Pick a ‘pray for rain’ coat

Some raincoats are so exciting, they’ll make you wish it is raining just so you can wear them outside. We strongly advise you invest in one of these functional yet fashionable coats when it gets wet – the ultimate silver linings.

Rains jacket – from the Danish company making wet weather gear for the global citizen, available from a number of New Zealand boutiques.

Kate Sylvester plastic mac – cover-up, while still showing off your outfit.

Karen Walker raincoat – 300mm waterproof, it’s as practical as a coat designed for the great outdoors, but with a fashion designer’s eye.

Pull on your Wellington boots

Gumboots are one of the few practical clothing items that have been inducted into the fashion hall of fame. Heritage brands such as Barbour and Hunter are now equally recognised for their style cred as their rubber tread thanks to many celebrity endorsements at music festivals and beyond. Make like Kate Moss and boot-up in an iconic style.

Original tall gloss Hunter boots from The Iconic – gumboots don’t get glossier than this.

Barbour boots from Wellies.co.nz – The original Wellington boots that have been stylish since 1894!

Original Chelsea boot from The Iconic all terrain ankle boots.
