FQ editor in chief Sarah Murray on motherhood:
What has been the most rewarding aspect of motherhood for you?
For me, it’s seeing my kids grow, learn new things and develop their own personalities. I love seeing them come into themselves.
How do you balance the demands of parenting with your personal and professional life?
I always say there is no real balance. The only way I can parent while being editor in chief and publisher of Fashion Quarterly is to work flexibly. Sometimes that means waking up early to do writing or to organise shoots before the kids get up, other times it means halting work for an hour to do the school/daycare pick up. The only thing constant is that it changes day to day.
What advice would you give to new mums who are just starting their parenting journey?
Every phase has a season, and it will pass.
How do you handle the challenges and stresses that come with being a mum?
Making sure I have my own alone time is essential for me. I exercise in some form every morning by myself where I’ll listen to a podcast or just music. I find it a really good time for thinking and working out ideas, best approaches, or strategy. Sometimes I love to just daydream.
Do you enjoy cooking?
My mum and sister are really good cooks, and I just didn’t inherit that gene. I much prefer eating over cooking, but I do love doing fun baking activities with the kids which always leaves us with a delicious afternoon tea treat.
Do you prefer cooking by yourself or with your kids?
When it comes to dinner, I prefer to cook by myself as we’re always in such a rush to do so much in the evenings – there’s homework, after school activities, baths, and books to all fit in before 7pm so cooking dinner needs to be quick. But when it comes to baking it’s more fun when the kids are involved.
How do you involve your children in the cooking process?
Mixing, pouring, adding ingredients – that’s the stuff the kids love doing. They pretty much lose interest after that until it comes to eating it!
What are some of your favourite recipes to make together as a family?
Our latest obsession is making ice cream with Shark’s Ninja Creami Deluxe 11 Ice Cream and Frozen Treat Maker. I usually make a vanilla ice cream, and then get a whole lot of treats that the kids can mix in. The kids are obsessed with creating their own personal flavour – so far we’ve used mini M&M’s, marshmallows, chocolate to mix in but there is certainly no shortage of ideas.
What tips do you have for parents who want to start cooking with their kids but don’t know where to begin?
Pull up a chair and let them help you – that’s all they want. I have to keep reminding myself to not take cooking or baking too seriously with the kids. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s more about the time spent together, having fun and making memories.
