As New York’s post-fashion week pack-down commences, we’re busy poring through the runway looks to ascertain each designer’s most covetable trends – and trends are there plenty. We have been spoiled for choice from the incoming spring summer ’24 ready to wear collections. There are modes of dressing that feel familiar (if you haven’t invested in double denim already, please do) and some unexpected details that are a sign of things to come.

Structurally speaking, there was a consistent stream of cream tailoring, utilitarian detailing, and oversized suiting in attendance. But it won’t be long before we give into sheer fabrics, ruching en masse, and ladylike embellishments to ‘add a little spice’ to our everyday ensembles.

And because the seasons cannot be relied on to stay in their proverbial lanes, most designers employed an ‘anything goes’ approach to their spring summer offerings with plenty of trench coats, leather layers, and even distressed knitwear alongside their core collection. Which means we’re likely going to see combinations of juxtaposing pieces coming together i.e. a super fine full length sheer slip dress underneath a heavy and oversized leather jacket or all-purpose cargo pants with an itty-bitty knit bralette.

Below, we break down which key trends are big news this season.

Trend: Embellishments

Whether you take your embellishments in the form of large reflective jewels, uniformed sequins, or woven in for a subtle sparkle, spring summer ’24 is motivated to make you shine bright like a diamond.

Trend: Ruching

All wrapped up in semi-sheer textiles, designers are gently guiding you to embrace your softer side with an emphasis of ruching seen on their runways. Sported in a spectrum of muted pastels, this Grecian detail is intrinsically feminine and full of fun.

Trend: Leather

However you take your leather – languid, layered, or otherwise – just be sure it’s on the menu. From slip dresses at Coach to thigh grazing boots at Dion Lee, leather is defying the parameters of traditional seasons and demands a second look for summer.

Trend: Appliqué

Baroque-inspired appliqué detailing was widespread at NYFW elevating simple silhouettes and injecting a little ladylike demure. At Carolina Herrera is was subtle and tactile, at Prabal Gurung it offered curious contrast, and at Jason Wu it was ethereal and elegant. Off the back of a long haul in minimalism, it seems we’re in need of some expertly placed feathers to ruffle.

Trend: Double denim

Casual Fridays are officially reinstated. We’ve seen double denim do the rounds more times than we care to admit but this time it’s rigid, it’s oversized, and we’re here to tell you to stick with it. Offering a canvas of washed vintage blue ready to paint with metallic jewellery, impactful pointed-toe pumps or dressed down with menswear, this denim trend is yours to take and run with.

Trend: Cream tailoring

Cream suiting and separates may have been a core feature at this year’s NYFW but it was everything but vanilla. Seen across leather, linen, and lightweight fabrics, more designers were embracing these natural hues over crisp whites for everyday outfits. Better still, the tonal formula is alive and well making it easy to work with existing pieces you already own.
