Brush up on everything you need to know about the Met Gala 2019 event so you’re in the know.

The Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art will, as always, be one of the biggest and more covered fashion fundraisers of the year. And as ever, it’s set to be a star-studded line-up – here’s what you need to know:

What is the Met Gala 2019 theme?

The Met Gala is infamous for its long-standing tradition that’s been in place the ’70s, where each year’s ball is themed. The Met Gala 2019 theme is ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, which is framed around Susan Sontag’s ‘Notes on Camp’ essay. In this essay published in 1964, she details what exactly ‘camp’ is. According to the Met Museum, this discusses how “elements of irony, [humour], parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, and exaggeration are expressed in fashion”.

This concept can be construed in different ways, depending on how guests interpret it, but you can certainly expect to see some daring, outlandish outfits.

2018’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, which was dedicated to the often uneasy relationship between fashion and religion.

When is the Met Gala 2019?

The Met Gala falls annually on the first Monday of May, so the Met Gala 2019 date is Monday, 6 May 2019. Red carpet coverage from New York normally starts from around 7pm EST, which is Tuesday morning NZT.

Where will the Met Gala 2019 take place?

The Met Gala always takes place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and 2019 is no exception.

How can I get Met Gala 2019 tickets?

Is it possible to get tickets to the Met Gala, you ask? There is, and we’ve found an extensive ‘how to get tickets to the Met Gala‘ guide that you should definitely read. Although we will add: it’s certainly no easy feat. According to Fortune, the Met Gala 2019 ticket price is costed at around $30,000 per person (or $275,000 per table), so you have to be prepared to splash out if you want to attend – and even if you stump up the cash, Anna Wintour personally vets each and every guest and it’s strictly invite-only.

Who are the Met Gala 2019 hosts?

As with every year, US Vogue editor Anna Wintour picks a select few to help her co-host the Met Gala. The 2019 event will be co-chaired by Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, and Serena Williams.

How to watch the Met Gala 2019

The infamous Met Gala isn’t televised, but lots of news outlets will be covering the event via live streams and red carpet coverage – like us! After they walk the red carpet and navigate the hundreds of paparazzi, celebrities go through to a private cocktail party, before exploring the exhibit, having dinner and enjoying live performances. Sounds right up our street.

Who is attending the Met Gala 2019?

The Met Gala guest list doesn’t get revealed beforehand, but as numbers tend to be capped at around 700 people, it’s normally a list that includes influential celebrities and trailblazers across the music, film, fashion, and arts and culture sectors.

Does the Met Gala have any rules?

There are a few rules, but attendees often break them. For example, taking selfies is frowned upon, but we’ve definitely seen our fair share of Met Gala selfies and group shots over the years. The Met is also a no-smoking affair – but that also hasn’t stopped celebs as we’ve witnessed on various celeb Insta accounts!
