The bold lip

One of the easiest ways to look polished, glamorous and put together is to wear a bold lip. Right now anything goes, so choose a bright colour and wear it with confidence. For a look that is totally your own, get two shades and mix them together to produce your own customised lipstick that no one else will be wearing.

Step 1: Line your lips with a pencil.

Step 2: Start with the cupid’s bow and then work down the side that is fullest on the top lip. Match the other side to it.

Step 3: Next line your bottom lip, again starting in the middle and then going out along either side.

Step 4: Make sure you go right into the corners of your mouth, because if you don’t it will be noticeable when you smile.

Step 5: Apply your lipstick. Blot once and apply again.

Expert tip: Always have your mouth closed when you are lining your lips because that way you’ll get the true contour. “If your mouth is open it distorts slightly, so when it’s closed you can see the shape of your mouth as it really is,” says Matson.

Our picks: Bobbi Brown Lip Colour in Sultry Red, $54; MAC Lipstick in Femme-De-Luxe, $60; L’Oréal Paris Glam Matte Cherry Crop, $24; L’Oréal Paris Glam Matte Fuchsia Flare, $24; and YSL Gloss Volupté in 106, $55.
