Whether you’re ready or not, autumn officially arrived on March 1. We now face the brutal transition from warm months of breezy summer dresses and little care for the cold, into brisk morning air, gloomy days and the desperate need to layer up.  The trick to navigating the shift? A capsule wardrobe built on elevated essentials. Think statement coats, textural blouses, the perfect pair of denim and a flawless boot. With the right foundations in place, even New Zealand’s unpredictable autumn becomes an opportunity to take your wardrobe from bleak to chic.

Faux fur coats and funnel-neck jackets

Milan Fashion Week has confirmed one thing: faux fur is back, and the leather funnel-neck jacket is also along for the ride. These statement layers are the easiest way to transform a simple outfit into something far more luxurious. Throw one over classic denim and a black boat-neck top for an effortless night-out look.

The Frankie Shop 'Hope; faux fur jacket, $479.
Zara faux leather coat, $229.
Zara leather bomber jacket, $559.

Lace blouses

Few pieces balance romance and polish quite like a lace blouse. The intricate texture introduces softness, while structured silhouettes keep the look feeling modern rather than overly delicate. On Chloé’s Fall 2024 runway, sheer lace blouses styled with tailored outerwear and classic jeans offered a compelling blueprint for how to wear the look now.

Zara lace top, $45.
With Jean Belinda top, $244.

The perfect denim

Finding the perfect pair of denim is rarely straightforward. With so many shapes to choose from, the best fit ultimately comes down to personal style. From timeless straight legs, sculptural barrel cuts, to vintage washes, the right denim sets the tone for any autumn wardrobe. My favourites? Bootcut, classic straight-leg and a soft flare for a subtle nod to the ’70s.

Mother Denim The Hustler Roller Sneak jean, $599.
Levi’s 501 ‘90s jeans, $179.
Rag and Bone Featherweight Sofie high-rise jean, $499.

The forever boot

A well-made boot has the power to elevate any autumn outfit. Practical yet undeniably stylish, they anchor everything from denim to dresses while keeping your feet warm through crisp mornings and cool evenings. Invest in a quality pair and they’ll become a wardrobe mainstay you reach for year after year. The season’s top styles? Pointed-toe ankle boots, sleek knee-highs and effortless brown suede.

La Tribe Lou riding boot, $599.
Tony bianco Rupert boot, $333.
Mi Piaci Annie cowboy boot, $600.
