FQ Radar: November picks by Phoebe Watt

A few of Phoebe’s favourite things this month…

Deadly Ponies x Len Lye Furnaces clutchWANT: Deadly Ponies x Len Lye ‘Loco’ clutch, and 2016 journal with cover
I had the pleasure of writing about the Deadly Ponies x Len Lye collaboration for FQ’s summer issue, and ever since the lookbook showed up in my inbox in September it’s been an excruciating wait for this very limited edition collection to drop. The A4 notebook sized clutch in the ‘Furnaces’ print, and the 2016 journal with the ‘Fired’ journal cover are the ultimate power accessories and I can’t wait to start rocking up to meetings and interviews with them under my arm.

Byredo Gypsy Water

BEAUTY BUY: Byredo ‘Gypsy Water’ EDP 50ml, $168 from Mecca Cosmetica
Every single thing about this fragrance ticks the box for me – the whimsical name, the minimalistic packaging, the fact that you can’t pick it up from any old pharmacy. Oh, and with notes of bergamot, pepper, pine needles, vanilla and sandalwood, it smells incredible too.

Tales from the Back Row by Amy Odell

READING: Tales from the Back Row by Amy Odell
Amy Odell is a former fashion blogger for New York Magazine’s The Cut, and now-editor of Cosmopolitan.com. Her collection of essays Tales from the Back Row is what it is – a light, interesting-enough beach read for the fashion fan. The best thing about this book is that it led to my discovering that you can ‘borrow’ e-Books from the library. It took me half an hour to figure out that I had to download a (free) app called OverDrive onto my Kindle, but from there it was smooth sailing. You can borrow any book for two weeks and then it automatically vanishes from your device. For a person like me who perpetually racks up late fees for no good reason, this feature is worth its weight in gold coins.

DRINK: Bia Saigon at XuXu Dumpling Bar
With summer just around the corner I am so ready to swap red wines in dark bars for beers in the sun. If anyone wants to hang out with me at any point over the next four months, I’m going to propose Bia Saigons in the courtyard at XuXu with a side of Chicken Potstickers.

Monica's Eatery in New Plymouth

EAT: Monica’s Eatery in New Plymouth
Monica’s is the beautifully refurbished restaurant at New Plymouth’s Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, which adjoins the brand new Len Lye Centre. I ate there recently while on assignment for FQ and the menu was extremely difficult to order from, in the best possible way. I didn’t regret my choice of beef cheek tagliatelle, but next time I’m in town (which will be sooner rather than later – NP represent), I’ll be prioritising a breakfast of blueberry pancakes with cashew pear cream.
