Every costume tells a story. Kate Hawley has spent two decades making sure those stories are unforgettable.

For more than two decades, Kate Hawley has helped bring some of cinema’s most extraordinary worlds to life. From Middle-earth and gothic mansions to futuristic battlefields, her richly imagined costumes have transported audiences across genres, centuries and imagined universes.

This year, Hawley is honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the FQ Fashion Awards, recognising a remarkable career that has taken New Zealand creativity to the global stage. One of the country’s most celebrated creatives, Hawley has built an extraordinary body of work across film, theatre, opera and ballet. Her credits include The Lovely Bones, The Hobbit trilogy, Crimson Peak and Suicide Squad. Most recently, her work on Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein earned her a number of awards, including an Academy Award, BAFTA Award and Critics’ Choice Award, cementing her place among the world’s leading costume designers.

The FQ Fashion Awards judges praised Hawley for her contributions that reached well beyond the screen.

“Kate Hawley’s influence is almost impossible to quantify,” they said. “Through an extraordinary career working alongside some of the world’s most visionary filmmakers, she has demonstrated that New Zealand creativity belongs on the global stage. Her contribution extends far beyond costume design, leaving an enduring legacy for our creative industries.”

Hawley’s creative journey began in Wellington, where a childhood immersed in music, literature and history first sparked a fascination with storytelling. After studying at Wellington Polytechnic, Hawley earned a scholarship to London’s prestigious Motley Theatre Design Course before returning to New Zealand to create sets and costumes for the Royal New Zealand Ballet, New Zealand Opera and other acclaimed stage productions. It was there she developed the meticulous approach to research and character that would become her signature as her career expanded onto some of Hollywood’s biggest productions.

For Hawley, every garment begins with the story. “I serve the text and the director’s vision, so everything comes from that,” she told FQ. “Whatever world we are creating, I look at the context of the character to their environment, the tone, the arc. It may be a colour or texture. A silhouette. A moment. I keep distilling all these elements as we build the rules of the world.”

That philosophy has seen Hawley collaborate with acclaimed filmmakers including Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro, creating costumes that don’t simply dress characters but become an integral part of the worlds they inhabit. Even after receiving the film industry’s highest honours, Hawley remains quick to credit the collective effort behind every production. Reflecting on winning the Academy Award for Frankenstein, she recalls being distracted by the star-studded presentation.

“That was a big night! I was quite distracted by the fact that it was Anna Wintour and Anne Hathaway presenting,” she says. “I was incredibly proud that the work of our costume team was recognised. As our leader, Guillermo made it that way. We think of ourselves as one department.”

For the next generation of creatives, her advice is simple: “Ask yourself more ‘what ifs’. Experiment with your contemporaries. Tell stories together and support each other’s work — that’s where your future is.”

It is fitting advice from a designer whose own career has been built on curiosity, collaboration and an unwavering commitment to craft. Hawley has demonstrated that costume is never simply what a character wears — it is storytelling in its most immersive form. Her legacy extends well beyond the screen, inspiring generations of New Zealand creatives to think bigger, collaborate boldly and imagine without limits.
