If you’ve followed Jessie Bush of @wethepeoplestyle via Instagram, you’ll know she adores the warmer weather (escaping from her London home to exotic locations like Mallorca, Puglia, and the island of Mauritius), and that her casual cool yet eclectic style is truly aspirational, no matter the season.

Sarah Murray interviewed Bush for Fashion Quarterly’s summer edition where they talked about the perils of social media, preparing to become a mum, and Bush’s latest collaboration with London-based brand Kitri. But Murray also managed to ask the important questions for FQ readers, including Bush’s five key investment pieces for a capsule wardrobe that will take you through summer and beyond. You’re welcome!

1. An oversized shirt

I tend to live in oversized shirts all summer – they are a classic for a reason. They look good with pretty much everything and make for the perfect beach cover-up. Light linen or cotton work best – natural fibres are your friend in the heat.

2. A voluminous dress

I’m a big dress person – both literally and figuratively. My wardrobe has a lot of dresses, and I’ve definitely got a thing for voluminous, statement dresses. A crisp oversized white dress paired with simple sandals will always be a winner.

3. Comfortable sandals

Speaking of sandals – I love a comfy sandal that you can live in all summer long. Birkenstock does great design collabs each season which are as cool as they are comfortable. I still live in my Birkenstock x Proenza Schouler sandals from two summers ago.

4. Playful prints

When I’m not pregnant, I’m all about a playful mini. I like having fun with colours and prints, and I always like a cool mini (like my Kitri ‘Buffy’ mini skirt) with a white tee and strappy sandals. The same goes for a cool pair of printed trousers to wear out in the evening – just pair with a white tee, slick heels and a bold lip; it’s dressed up without being too formal or boring.

5. Plenty of swimwear

And of course, no summer wardrobe is complete without a bikini or 5. I’ve always loved Hunza G and Bond Eye swim, and rather conveniently they are perfect for growing pregnant bodies (although not a requirement of course!).
