Gluten-free or coeliac? It can be tough times trying to find a dining experience to cater to your dietary requirements. Here are five of the best places to eat in Auckland if you’re saying no to wheat, barley, and rye.

Masu

Masu
90 Federal St, central city

Ask for Masu’s entirely gluten-free menu and tuck into spicy tuna maki rolls, extra large tiger prawns, or chicken wings glazed with ginger and mirin.

Wise Cicada

Wise Cicada
88 Broadway, Newmarket

Wise Cicada is currently in the process of obtaining Gluten Free Accreditation, which is great news for coeliacs. Try the Peruvian quinoa bowl with creamy cashew cheese sauce, or the matcha pancakes with almond butter fudge ice cream.

The Chip Shop

The Chip Shop
711 Manukau Rd, Royal Oak

On the GF menu here are chunky kūmara fries, homemade pāua fritters and mushy peas. There’s no need to skip classic fish ‘n’ chip favourites either – regular flour batter is swapped for mixed-maize flour batter.

Mekong Baby

Mekong Baby
262 Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby

With loads of ways to go gluten-free at this Asian-fusion restaurant, like wok-fried squid with nuoc cham and Vietnamese mint, or braised pork belly with caramelised chilli and soy, you’ll have to force yourself to save room for dessert: we recommend the chocolate and hazelnut mousse cake.

Mimosa

Mimosa
460 Lake Rd, Takapuna

Nearly everything at this North Shore lunch spot can be made gluten-free. The Peanut Power smoothie, Moroccan mushrooms with The Midnight Baker’s Freedom Loaf toast, and choco banana waffles are all safe. The cabinet is always stacked with fresh baked loaves and raw cheesecakes, too.
