Christchurch Lyttleton

Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights

With almost 30 events spread over ten days, the Annual Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights boasts music from local bands, light shows, delicious food and fireworks displays. Running from 13-21 June and hosted by the seaside town of Lyttelton, the Festival of Lights can be enjoyed in the crisp South Island air accompanied by a glass of hot mulled wine.

The Botanic Gardens and Hagley Park

Christchurch is lovingly known as ‘The Garden City’ and is home to New Zealand’s largest inner city park. At 407 acres, Hagley Park provides endless leisure space for its 1.1 million visitors each year. Relax and unwind amongst exotic and local flora and fauna in the Botanic Gardens or float your way up the Avon River, we guarantee you won’t want to leave The Garden City.

185 empty chairs

An artist’s tribute to the lives lost in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquake, ‘185 empty chairs’ is the moving installation located on the corner of Cashel and Madras Streets outside the St Paul’s Trinity Pacific Presbyterian Church. Maintained by the locals, you’ll often see a working bee of painters applying another layer of white to the chairs that sit vacant in the remembrance of the casualties of the Christchurch Quake.

Cardboard Cathedral

The Christchurch Cardboard Cathedral is the world’s only cathedral made substantially of cardboard. Designed by Shigeru Ban, this temporary space is the most internationally recognised building in the country and was built in order to demonstrate the city’s resilience. Located in Latimer Square, it is a beacon of hope for Christchurch citizens to solidify the plan to rebuild the city. Absolutely a must visit, the Cardboard Cathedral is an architectural beauty and definitely something to marvel at.

Re start mall Christchurch

Re:Start Mall

With a need to coax Christchurch citizens back into the CBD after the 2011 earthquake, the Re:Start mall was constructed from containers in order to quickly create a functioning retail space. From its small beginnings, the space now boasts over 50 retailers including labels such as Ruby, Lululemon and Storm and has played a major part in rebuilding Christchurch’s tourism industry. Stop by for a coffee and a bit of retail therapy and enjoy this beautifully crafted space.
