Brown is no longer the sensible choice, it’s the chic one. Lucy Slight shares how to wear it right now.

If an all-brown outfit still evokes memories of your school librarian, shake that thought off for good, because brown is the ‘It’ neutral for autumn/winter 2026. Richer than beige, softer than black, and arguably more universally flattering — chocolate, coffee, and tobacco tones aren’t sensible or safe, instead they offer a modern base for your bolder colours, such as red, sky blue, and even yellow.

In beauty, the appeal is the same, with brown giving definition without the severity. Swap your go-to black eyeliner for a smudgy espresso in the lash line for a more lived-in look. On the lips, cocoa and rosy-brown shades feel grown-up.

Working with your natural skin tone is key when it comes to playing with brown-toned make-up. Fair skin looks more alive with cooler taupes, milk chocolate, and soft mocha shades, so avoid anything too orange or it might start to get muddy. You’ll also want to keep your browns sheer and well-blended.

Caramel, cinnamon, and more bronzy browns are lovely on medium skin tones as they echo that natural warmth. Try a brown mascara, a toasted nude lip and tan eyeshadow for that little bit of polish without being OTT. For olive skin, chocolate bronzer paired with a rose or berry lip gives instant lift, while deeper skin tones can really wear the whole spectrum with ease.

Rich cocoa and mahogany browns look even more striking with a golden highlight on the inner corners of the eyes, a glossy lid, or a bit of warmth in the cheeks. They keep the skin looking radiant and dimensional, rather than flat.

And of course, the easiest entry point of all is a brown nail. If you naturally favour a nude polish, a deep brown will still work next to any colour in your wardrobe, but you could also play with a subtle chocolate French tip, a matte finish, or a high-shine gloss for that stilltrending glazed doughnut look.
