Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland-based photographer, and dear friend of Fashion Quarterly, Ruby Hamilton (@rubyjhamilton) hadn’t set out with any real intention to shoot her overseas adventure but after a full-on year shooting both commercial work and weddings she was looking forward to just picking up her camera when she felt called to it. “Looking back on these photos now, I am so glad I was able to capture so much to look back on in years to come.” Below, she shares her experience staying in Sicily through her lens to inspire your next international adventure.
STAY
Scopello was one of the most charming places I’ve ever visited! It’s a must if you’re looking for a slower pace and some time in nature. The airbnb we stayed in was owned by a beautiful Sicilian woman who made us feel so at home, fresh cheeses, Italian cookbooks and the best local insights!
DO
The Zingaro National Park walk is a must if you’re visiting Scopello. It’s the best way to see the beautiful coves along the coastline and the nature is truly something else. Top tip: go early in the morning and take plenty of water because it’s a 13km round trip with several hikes up and down to the beaches. Visit Tonnara di Scopello and have a swim and a drink. It’s a beautiful spot.
DINE
The local market and bakeries in Scopello are filled with treats including fresh locally made cheses, delicious produce and the sweetest butchery who will ply you with cured meats to snack on while you explore the aisles.
