From the playful revival of shaggy bangs to the precision of a contoured cut, these five trends lend themselves to ease of wear and maintenance whilst remaining fresh and chic. And with many of them seen sported on the runways at Paris Fashion Week, they have the fashion industry’s tick of approval. If you’ve been looking to update your image, JOICO New Zealand Ambassador and hair expert Felicity Bruce weighs in on the five hottest trends that promise to elevate your style game effortlessly.
1. Shaggy Bangs
Shaggy bangs are making a comeback, adding a playful and effortless vibe to hairstyles. This textured fringe provides movement and a carefree aesthetic, complementing various hair lengths and types. “Shaggy bangs are choppy and the perfect addition to blend into any of the layered looks,” says Bruce. “Due to the effortless nature of this look, using a bit of texturising finisher will help add volume and movement to keep the natural undone look.”

2. Layered Lob
The layered lob, or long bob, remains a timeless and versatile option for those seeking a chic and easy-to-manage hairstyle. Layers add movement and dimension to the lob, allowing for various styling options while maintaining a sophisticated edge. “Soft texture is key to achieving this effortlessly fun look,” notes Bruce. “Opt for cuts that exude a carefree vibe and require minimal maintenance. A long bob is great for this and suits almost all face shapes.”
3. Lived-in highlights
Embracing a natural lived-in blonde look is about achieving a sun-kissed glow without the maintenance of constant touch-ups. This low-maintenance style incorporates subtle variations in blonde shades, giving a relaxed appearance. In previous seasons the craze has been bold money pieces and bright blonde hair. But for 2024, Bruce says we’ll be softening them out and opting for a more natural look. “Softening money pieces and barely there highlights is the epitome of chic this season. We want to embody a natural look but also make sure our hair stays healthy through all the bleaching and toning we take it through.”
4. Butterfly cut
The butterfly cut is a bold and artistic choice, characterised by layers that resemble the wings of a butterfly. This avant-garde style adds drama and flair, making a statement for those who love to experiment with their hair. Felicity says this season we’ll see a lot of playful looks that maintain a full and bouncy appearance. The Butterfly Cut achieves this style perfectly and is an ideal choice for nearly all hair types.
5. Contoured cut
The contoured cut is all about precision and enhancing facial features. This tailored approach creates a flattering shape that accentuates the client’s unique bone structure, offering a modern and sophisticated look. “The right angles are key,” says Bruce. “It’s a cut that is tailored for every individual and when done properly can completely transform your look. But this isn’t all about the cut – it comes down to styling as well. If you’re leaving your contoured cut natural, I’d suggest using a product like JOICO Power Whip Whipped Foam to help keep the contoured flow.”
