Me Before You.

With the cold months officially here, we are switching our mindset from days at the beach to getting cosy at the cinema.

From the epic romance drama Me Before You (cue tears) to fashion blockbusters Absolutely Fabulous and The First Monday in May, here are our must-see movies over the coming months.

1. Me Before You

Dubbed the next Notebook, this romantic drama starring Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke and Love Rosie’s Sam Claflin tells the story of an eccentric small town girl who forms an unlikely friendship with an affluent paralyzed man, which changes the course of their lives and hearts forever. Get ready to pass the tissues, this one’s going to be a tear-jerker!

2. Alice Through the Looking Glass

The sequel to Tim Burton’s epic Alice in WonderlandAlice Through the Looking Glass sees a more grown-up Alice (Mia Wasikowska) return to the magical world of Underland to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and stop the evil Lord of Time (Sacha Baron Cohen). This sequel is directed by James Bobin and features costumes designed once again by the talented Colleen Atwood.

3.  Love & Friendship

This wickedly funny British period drama, adapted from Jane Austen’s novel Lady Susan, is set in the late 1700s and tells the story of the “biggest flirt in London” the widowed Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale). Lady Vernon temporarily takes up residence at her in-laws’ country estate and while there decides to find herself a husband… and one for her daughter, Frederica, too! We do love a good costume comedy – and the fact that the film features Stephen Fry cannot be overlooked either.

4. Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie

They’re backkkkk! Edina “Eddie” Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone (Joanna Lumley) return to our screens as they continue to try and live the high life around London’s trendiest spots – but not without incident. Blamed for a fracas at a très important fashion party, the duo go on the run as they are embroiled in a media storm and are pursued by the paparazzi. It wouldn’t be Ab Fab without a cameo… or 60 (that’s the number of celebrities film bosses have confirmed are set to appear!) and the list reads of a who’s who of British fashion – Kate Moss, Stella McCartney, Alexa Chung and Lara Stone, to name just a few.
Release date: August 11 2016

5. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

Sick of her life covering low-profile stories in New York City, TV reporter Kim Barker (Tina Fey) embarks on a life-changing journey when she takes a job as a war reporter in Afghanistan. With a newfound freedom and help of fellow journalist Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie), Kim slowly finds her feet in the war-stricken state and soon learns that each story comes at a dangerous price.

6.Florence Foster Jenkins

Academy Award winner Meryl Streep transforms into the delightfully eccentric and ever-so-slightly tone deaf New York socialite Florence Foster Jenkins, who lived out her dream of becoming an amateur opera singer in the early 1900s, despite having a terrible singing voice. Also starring Hugh Grant as Florence’s manager St. Clair Bayfield and Simon Helberg as composer Cosmé McMoon, this drama-comedy is a must-see and is said to be one of Grant’s best performances yet.
Release date: In cinemas now

7. The First Monday in May

There are two dates circled in our diary this year: One is the first Monday in May, the date of the annual Met Gala and one of our favourite days in the fashion calendar. Or, as Andre Leon Talley describes it: “…the Super Bowl of social fashion events”. The other date circled, highlighted and starred is the 29th September; the day The First Monday in May – a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the planning of this major event – is set to hit New Zealand cinemas.
Release date: September 29 2016
