Spring is all about loosely-done, don’t-care hair. Tame your tresses (but not too much) with these simple techniques.

RELAXED LOW BUN

The sun has set and your salty hair is drying in style. It’s time to twist it back and loosen up!

Step 1: Prep dry hair with Joico Body Luxe Volumising Foam, $32, for texture, and use Joico Iron Clad, $27, to protect the hair from hot tools.
Step 2: Part hair to either side or in the middle (you choose!) and loosely tong big sections of the hair with a medium-barrel curling tong.
Step 3: Once tonged, twist hair away from the face, pulling it gently so the twist isn’t too tight, and secure into a ponytail at the nape of the neck.
Step 4: Split pony in two and tie hair into a knot for a low bun effect. Secure with bobby pins and loosen the knot for a softer finish.

FLUFFY FRONT BRAID

For effortless chic, mussed-up braids are a spring staple. Try this quick-fingered technique to get the look.

Step 1: Blow-dry Joico Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Cream, $27, into hair. Once dry, gently tease hair and run flat irons through – this is called ‘texture setting.’
Step 2: Brush out the set with a bristle brush, then split hair into two sections down the middle and tie into braids on each side.
Step 3: Take both braids and fold them up and across the head, securing with bobby pins, then pull on the braids to fatten them out and create extra volume.
Step 4: Set the look using Joico Flip Turn Volumising Finishing Spray, $27.

HALF TOP KNOT

It’s the street style ‘do of the moment, and this season, it’s the only top knot you need to know.

Step 1: Blow-dry hair using Joico Body Luxe Volumising Foam, $32. Tong large sections of dry hair sporadically, then brush out to loosen the waves.
Step 2: Separate the horseshoe section of hair on the top of the head and give it a light backcomb at the roots, then twist hair onto itself and knot a few times before securing with bobby pins.
Step 3: For a bit of fun and a pop of colour, spritz Joico Instatint, $26, in pink – or blue, green or purple! – on to strands of hair and brush out to add softness to the colour.

TEXTURED PONYTAIL

Demure and delightful, this sleek yet surprisingly textured look is perfect for second day locks.

Step 1: Prep damp hair with Joico Body Luxe Root Lift, $32, and Joico Heat Set Blowout Perfecting Cream, $27, then blow wave into hair.
Step 2: Texture set the hair (as per the Fluffy Front Braid), then brush out and pull into a pony in the middle of the head (not too low) and secure with an elastic band.
Step 3: Take a small section of hair at the base of the ponytail and wrap around the hair elastic, locking it in place with a bobby pin.
Step 4: To add texture to the ponytail, use tongs to create a wave, then brush out. Create an even fatter look by teasing the inside of the pony and covering with the top layer of hair.

Perfect for festivals, weddings and weekends, this loosely tousled style is this season’s version of the beachy wave.

Step 2: Tong large sections in different directions, keeping it loose.
Step 3: Take small random sections in the nape and behind the hair and do mini braids.
Step 4: Shake out the curls and spray in Joico Hair Shake, $34, to finish.
