5 things we love this week: high fashion meets high country & at-home art

By Fashion Quarterly

Each week the Fashion Quarterly team rounds up what to read, buy, see, shop, eat, and drink.

1. Swimwear by Rachel Mills

Rachel Mills’ swimwear collection is a perfected range of shapes based on the brand’s best-selling underwear pieces and gifted patterns from local swimwear brand Jennifer Dean. Cut from a blend of recycled nylon and lycra, all pieces are made at the designer’s Mount Eden workroom.

From a form-fitting one-piece to a cropped sleeve top and a welcome variety of briefs, the swimwear collection is sleek yet understated, made to be lived in all summer long.

Pre-order the swimwear collection in weekly batches at rachelmills.co.nz. Each weekly pre-order batch closes at 11:59pm on a Tuesday night.

2. RUBY Blue

As we know, colour has the power to influence our emotions, and blue is a colour associated with joy and inspiration, embodying the innovation and creativity we now need more than ever.

This is why RUBY Creative Director Deanna Didovich has devised a collection entirely around the colour blue, exploring the shades ‘capri’, ‘cerulean’, ‘lagoon’, and ‘surf’.

Modelling the collection in her at-home studio is contemporary artist Claudia Kogachi, whose blue-hued artwork appears in the background of the campaign lookbook.

The first arrivals of RUBY Blue are available online now, and in-store from Friday 24 September.

3. Eden Hore: High Fashion/High Country

Farmer Eden Hore was a glamourous visionary who collected more than 200 couture gowns in the 1970s.

His stunning collection has been captured by celebrated fashion photographer Derek Henderson. The photos will be presented in a stand-alone exhibition at The Dowse from 4 December 2021.

Dr Chelsea Nichols, senior curator at The Dowse and co-curator of the exhibition, says that it will celebrate the pursuit of glamour in unexpected places.

“Although it will be filled with some of the most delicious retro dresses I’ve ever seen, this exhibition is about more than fashion—it is about celebrating those who dare to be different and bringing a little bit of Eden’s love of glamour into reach for anyone who craves it.”

Read more about the exhibition at dowse.org.nz. The Dowse is located at 45 Laings Road in Lower Hutt, a 15-minute drive from Wellington City.

4. Charlotte Tilbury x MECCA

The highly anticipated Charlotte Tilbury launch into New Zealand is here, featuring the iconic collections Pillow Talk, 10 Looks, Airbrush Flawless, Magic Skin, Glow, and Supermodel Brow.

The arrival has us hoping we’ll be able to soon walk into a MECCA store once we’re out of lockdown, with select MECCA stores offering eight-instore treatments so customers can experience the Charlotte Tilbury universe for themselves.

From a Pillow Talk Lips Beauty Lab class—where you can learn how to make your lips look their best—to a Magic Skin service—the perfect pre-makeup skin treatment, we’re ready to learn more from the Queen of Glow!

5. Modeletto

Now that we’re craving more play in our day, Modeletto has arrived at just the right time.

Offering air-dry pottery kits delivered to your door, you (and your children) can partake in therapeutic and explorative art—whether you’re looking to make a vase, ring holder, or ornament—the world is your oyster.

Even better, Modeletto encourages you to embrace the imperfections and messiness of the process, because after all, isn’t that what real life is all about?

Whether it’s for a slow Sunday, hen’s party activity, or a team-building exercise, bring the pottery to your place by visiting modelettostore.com.
