Dressing elegantly for an evening out in winter seems simple in theory, but is deceptively difficult to execute. Fortunately, there is a formula you can refer to time and time again which will prevent you from trying on half your wardrobe only to leave the house wearing your first option and a pool of dishevelled clothing in your wake.

Requiring a careful balance between style and comfort, you want to begin the process by landing on a sophisticated hero garment. Items such as a well-fitted dress or a tailored pantsuit in rich dark hues will always look chic under a longline coat. Curious necklines such as an off-the-shoulder style or a blazer with a plunging v are inherently feminine and partner sublimely with your more structured, practical outwear pieces.

From here you can choose to layer with opaque tights or stockings to keep your legs cosy, or brave the elements with bare legs if the climate permits. In terms of footwear, knee-high boots with fine heels, pointed-toe pumps, or velvet platforms will transform a formal day look into a chic evening look. You can go one of two ways with jewellery, introducing a pair of high-glamour earrings or paring it back with a fine necklace. You want to leave the scene-stealing to a statement clutch or small top-handle bag.

And lastly, complete your winter evening look with a sleek hairstyle and either subtle smokey eye make-up or a power lip colour to exude timeless elegance throughout the chilly night.
