There is no shortage of shops in Newmarket so it make sense there are plenty of refreshment spots dotted along the main street and tucked into boutique areas. The shop windows may be dressed in Kiini bikinis and frayed jeans but the eateries are laden with whipped feta and freshly ground coffee.

If you need to carb-load (or would prefer to opt for a lettuce bun), Burger Burger’s handfuls of goodness drip down your fingers with saucy goodness. While you can’t go past a classic beef cheeseburger, their tempting weekly specials have in the past included a burger with coconut prawns and chipotle mayo and another called ‘Blue Bambi’, featuring a venison patty with blue cheese. Add a caramel thickshake or a chocolate ice-cream sandwich from the ice-scream bar to your order for a delicious energy burst.
&Sushi

Over the road from Muse Boutique on Teed Street, &Sushi offers a selection of the most Instagrammable sushi in New Zealand, with flavours as unique as they look. With edible flowers everywhere, you can hand pick from sushi featuring purple rice, cucumber seaweed and strawberries. Or if you feel like a dish, their salmon sashimi and sashimi don look like a garden party on a plate.
L’affare Melrose

As part of the L’affare stable, this roastery and cafe at the back of Newmarket serves the freshest coffee on the block. It’s the first opening in Auckland and a new HQ for this Wellington cafe institution who has been making flat whites since before they were fashionable.
Best Ugly Bagel

Burger Burger’s neighbour delivers the best bagels (hence the name) and coffee in town. In the same precinct as Twenty Seven Names and Dry & Tea, it’s the perfect place to stop, and make an afternoon shopping and pamper plan. Their cream cheese and fennel oil toppings are a dream.
Cali
23/27 Nuffield Street
On the corner of Nuffield Street, Cali is reasonably new to Newmarket. It has transformed the Mac’s Brew Bar into a high-ceiling-ed and lightly decorated space perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with an impressive wine list. Their 48-hour pork belly looks very pretty with apple and mint slaw.
TriBeCa
8 George Street
If you’re more in the mood for Veuve Clicquot and à la carte, TriBeCa, in the historic brick Foundation Building near Trelise Cooper’s flagship, is a touch of class. Depending on how many calories you burned on Broadway, they offer 3, 5, 9 and 11 decadent courses. The 72-hour beef Tri Tip is a sensation.
