How to wear a slip dress casually

The best way to lend a laid-back vibe to this season’s coolest dress.

Toning down a satiny slip, best suited to nights out, and making it more apprope for daywear or, if you’re in a more sartorially-progressive office, workwear, is definitely one way of getting more dress bang for your buck.

Taking a leaf out of Bella Hadid’s style file, pairing a slip with an oversized distressed denim jacket immediately works to turn the volume way down. An oversized denim shirt would work just as well.

Sneakers are of course a great addition – you can go pristine Stan Smith white but you can just as easily grunge-up your look too. We love beaten up Chucks or lace up Vans for a cool street-ier vibe.

Bella’s choice of a detailed leather belt over the top of her champagne coloured slip helps break up her overall look and works because casual outfits are largely comprised of separates. The belt trick is a great way of achieving this.

Also, the belt helps ‘black’ up the dress as well by knocking back ethereal feminine floatiness the slip would have if worn without the accessory.

Finally, go low-key with the bag. A smaller chain-strap cross body bag would look cool or go quirky with a box bag like Bella’s.

Keep jewellery, make-up and hair all understated and there you have it – an easy way to turn your fancy frock into a day-wear style dream.
