As someone who rarely strays from my reliable triple coat of O.P.I’s ‘Bubble Bath’, it can be hard to keep up with all the nail trends as they come and go from circulation. In 2022, the trending look of the year was undoubtedly the ‘glazed donut’ nails popularised by Hailey Bieber, while last year saw the rise of pared-back, ultra-shiny ‘lip gloss’ nails (a favourite of FQ’s Sarah Murray).
As we approach winter in Aotearoa, we’re taking cues from the runways and leaning into a bold and bright aesthetic for our nails. So, if you feel like deviating from your tried and true favourites, read on to find out the nail trends you should be taking as inspiration for your next appointment.
1. Pretty pastels
It can be easy to stick to a monochromatic colour palette during the cooler months, but if you’re craving a bit of colour in your everyday ensembles, a pastel hue might be right up your alley. From buttery yellows to milky blues, a simple pastel wash on your nails offers a vibrant touch without feeling too bold.
2. Classic red
Energetic, confident, and a little bit sexy — there’s a reason why red nails are an enduring favourite. Deep red hues have been spotted all over the runways as of late, and we’re particularly loving a cool-toned burgundy or cherry shade on our nails at the moment.
3. Coquette nails
Bows not only make a cute adornment on your clothing, but on your nails as well. Dress up your favourite pink or light-hued polish with a dainty bow or two and let your playfully feminine side do the talking.
4. Nouveau French
Classic French manis have had a makeover this year. Featuring a subtle ombre-style gradient that transitions from light pink to milky-white, Nouveau French nails are a classy option for those who prefer something understated.
5. Aura nails
Offering a more modern take on the ombre effect is aura nails, which went viral on TikTok last year for their cool, ethereal aesthetic. Achieved by softly blending out one colour into another from the centre, this is the perfect manicure to brighten your mood in winter.
6. Chrome 2.0
Shiny, chrome-style nails are going nowhere in 2024. Whether added as an iridescent touch to your tips or a pearlescent wash across your entire nail, there’s a lot of ways to try and wear this look.
