To sleep in or not sleep in?

Is the weekend lie-in bad for you? Well, it might be.

That’s according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism which found sleeping in more at the weekends is linked to higher risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Researchers say changing sleep patterns can cause social jet lag. Shifting our sleeping habits by just a few hours has the effect of crossing a time zone as it throws out our circadian rhythms, making us feel sleepy during the day. So should we be setting the alarm on a Saturday?

Probably not.

While there are issues with sleeping in, the good outweighs the bad and a weekend lie-in can help you catch up on sleep you lost during the week. Previous sleep studies have shown if you lose five hours’ sleep during the week, just one and a half hours on the weekend will help make up for it.

Something to think about for the up coming weekend…
