Naturally when examining the top models over the last couple of years, the likes of Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin and sisters Gigi and Bella Hadid spring to mind.
Famously dubbed as It-models and Instagram girls by Vogue, this quartet not only boasts a combined following of millions on Instagram, but also share a tight-knit friendship, lucrative modelling contracts, and dominate catwalks, street style and fashion campaigns.
However, according to a recent report by Instagram, their Insta-girl status might not be as cemented as we think. The social platform announced that while they may have a high number of followers, the level of engagement by said followers doesn’t match up. Does this mean that this girl gang is being pipped at the post?
Instead, the title of top Insta girl belongs to Julia Ratner, whose rank according to Instagram is determined by having the highest percentage of interactions relative to her number of followers. So while Julia technically “only” has 39,100 followers, they are liking, commenting and tuning in more than any other model’s Instagram following in the world.
With names like Hadid off the table, you may think that it would be a struggle to pinpoint the other top ten members. However, a quick scroll proves that most are familiar faces in the fashion scene, including Kaia and Presley Gerber who hold 5th and 6th place.
It just goes to show that the success of an Instagram account shouldn’t be based on its following but rather the level of engagement.
