Whether you’re looking for a complete do redo or a couple of hot styling ideas for the upcoming party season, it’s always nice to be a step ahead when it comes to your look.

Frank Apostolopoulos, five times Australian Hairdresser of the Year – in collaboration with Servilles – has created five incredible styles that are far from your white bread blow dry. From mad colour to romantic texture, read on for five of the hottest hair looks for the upcoming season.

Textured hair trend

The Trend: Texture Play

The look: Crimped and then brushed out.
“We’ve seen a lot of crimping on the catwalk recently and unexpected textures in hair,” says Frank. “So this look is translated into something more wearable for the street. This was really about celebrating a current texture and organic feel. Crimping is something that is big right now but not that daggy obvious crimp, something much more organic.”

Best for: “This look is great for girls to do at home and is good for girls with longer hair that want to add that something extra without having to commit to something permanent, as it washes right out,” says Frank.

How to get it:
1. Blow dry the hair with a soft mousse (try Wella SP Delicate Volume) to create that dry texture. You could also blow dry in some dry shampoo to create a bit more texture.
2. With a pair of crimpers, start crimping random parts. Crimp from mid-lengths to ends and avoid crimping roots.
3. Once the hair is crimped, gently brush the hair to soften the look.
4. Set with a light hold hairspray.

Try: Silver Bullet Volumising Crimper, $165

The disheveled updo

The Trend: The Disheveled Up Do

The look: “The idea is to make it look slept on; to make it look like it was done the day before and worn in. We wanted this to have a softer feeling opposed to polished (like when you first create a braid).”

Best for: Longer hair lengths

How to get it:
1. Blow dry with a salt spray. Do this very roughly to create texture.
2. Split the hair in half creating a middle parting and create two ponytails on the side of each ear.
3. Plait the ponytails with a basic three-strand plait on each side and then tie the ends.
4. Grab both plaits and cross them over the top of the head, pinning them down as you go.
5. Add a little bit of hairspray (Wella EIMI Stay Styled Finishing Spray will give you hold but without being crunchy and stiff).
6. Then lastly, get your fingers in there and pull a few bits out of the plait and hairline to give it a softness and worn texture.

Try: Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray, $34.95; Wella EIMI Stay Styled Finishing Spray, $27

Bright hair colour is a summer trend

The Trend: Go Bright

The look: Brazen neon tones with a ‘worn in’ look. Two tone hair with one shade at the roots and another on the mid lengths and tips.
“This is based on the hair people want two or three weeks after it’s been done because sometimes when it’s freshly styled, it’s stiffer and more contrived than what people want. We wanted to create something that gives this look straight away opposed to having to wait for it. This is about the organicness of the hair, whilst keeping it balanced, edgy and playful.”

Best for: Natural blonde or lightened hair is best for maximum impact.

How to get it: These washed out dreamy tones can be achieved in salon, or if you’d rather a temporary ‘do then try it at home with a wash out cream or spray colour.

Try: Lust Semi-Permanent Colour, $21.50; Joico InstaTint, $9.99

Hair accessories

The Trend: Hair Accessories

The look: A little bit pretty, a little bit punk. “The use of pins instead of a traditional hair accessory offers an edgy alternative and is something that is not too contrived.”

Best for: Any hair type

How to get it:
“The beauty of this look is that it utilises something most women already have on hand – bobby pins. You don’t have to be an expert to put together this look and there are no boundaries on what you do with them, as the punk vibe is all about no rules. We would however suggest avoiding the use of them on a sleek hairstyle, as they may look a bit heavy.”

Wet hair trend

The Trend: Wet Wet

The look: Scrunchy textural wet look hair.

Best for: Short to mid length hair works best for this. “This is also a great way to disguise hair that’s a few days old.”

How to get it: Squeeze and scrunch a salt spray into the hair, really working it in and then let it dry naturally or use a diffuser on your hair dryer to encourage the natural character of the hair. So many people have a bit of wave in their hair and don’t realise that by adding a particular product they can really encourage and enhance their hair to do this!

Try: Wella EIMI Ocean Spritz Spray, $27; Redken Beach Envy Wave Aid, $33
