Science behind some of the craziest beauty treatments
Ever wondered why rolling tiny needles across your face is good for your skin? Or how sound waves can help hydrate skin? Some skin correcting treatments you hear about may sound a little crazy, but they are all designed to give you effective long term results. We’re letting you in on the science behind some of the craziest treatments:

SonophoresisSound waves:
What:  Non-invasive treatment using sound waves to push the products through the top layer of the skin and into the dermis for continued hydration.
Why: Helps to repair redness and surface capillary damage, while aiding in collagen production for a more even complexion.
How: A small paddle is gently passed over your skin, while another metal paddle is either tucked under your shoulder or held in your hand to close the circuit. As the paddle is passed over the skin, the sound waves penetrate the top layer of skin causing micro vibrations which allows the active products to penetrate into the skin.

Microdermabrasion – advanced micro crystal exfoliation:
What:  Microdermabrasion is an advanced mechanical exfoliation.
Why: It exfoliates the top layer of the skin by helping to remove dry skin and black heads, leaving you with a smoother, more refreshed complexion. A Microdermabrasion is a great treatment to begin with before having more advanced treatments.
How: Using a small hand piece, a small amount of skin is vacuumed up and tiny crystals are blown onto the skin to cause micro abrasions. The first treatment is quite gentle, but as your skin gets used to the treatment, the pressure and suction will increase to get better, more long-lasting results.

ChillSculpt® – fat freezing:
What: ChillSculpt® is a fat reduction treatment.
Why: This treatment reduces those stubborn bulges that won’t seem to go away even after diet and exercise. It sculpts and shapes your body to help target those pesky fat areas.
How: ChillSculpt® uses Cryolypolosis technology – controlled cooling – to freeze and reduce fat cells. The targeted fat cells gradually disappear naturally through the body’s normal metabolic process. It is not a weight loss solution but ideal for reducing unwanted fat that cannot be easily removed through diet and exercise.

Collagen Induction – Needling/Dermal Rolling:
What: A dermal roll, or collagen induction, is a treatment that uses 260 fine needles fixed to a silicon roller to puncture the skin and intentionally cause micro damage to the cells found in the deeper layer of skin (basal layer).
Why: Collagen Induction is used to treat fine lines, dryness and tightness and restores skin tone and texture. It is ideal to start during your 30s to ensure that your skin looks like it does today, when you’re 60!
How: A topical anaesthetic is applied to the area before a treatment to make it more comfortable. The roller is passed over the skin twice, in varying directions, to ensure that the cells deep in the basal layer have been affected from different angles.

Photo Rejuvenation – Variable Pulsed Light Laser:
What: Photo Rejuvenation uses light and heat to penetrate deep into the skin to target pigmentation.
Why: This treatment is ideal for treating pigmentation, redness and sun spots, it also aids in the production of collagen for a smoother, more even complexion.
How: The light from the laser is attracted to the haemoglobin (red blood cells) found in the pigment of the skin. It causes the treated pigment to separate and come to the surface of the skin, which is what we refer to as the ‘milo effect’, as it simply looks like little crusts of milo on the skin which then flake off, resulting in reduced pigmentation.

Fractional CO2 Laser – CO2 Laser:
What: Fractional CO2 Laser uses heat and oxygen to penetrate deep into the skin. The heat pushes through the skin to draw out the moisture from within the cells causing damage to the cells below. Once damaged, these cells regenerate stronger and faster than before.
Why: This is an advanced treatment but one which achieves truly extraordinary results – you need to be able to commit to the treatment programme in order to achieve long term results.
How: The area is treated with a topical anaesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable. The lasers are spaced out evenly (not every area of the skin is treated) and the hand piece is moved across the skin in a pattern so the treatment area will look like small squares with evenly spaced dots. The heat that is used to penetrate the skin reaches the basal layers (fibroblast cells) with the heat is pushing through to draw out the moisture of the skin and damage the cells below.
