While it’s the fashion that often takes centre stage at the Met Gala, the beauty looks always come a very close second. From blush pink hues stretching from the eyes to the temples, facial embellishments, and sculptural hair delights, we’ve rounded up the five biggest emerging beauty trends that were seen on the red (make that cream) carpet.
1. Tickled Pink
From hot pink to a barely there blush, the rosy hue was popular in varying shades. Visible on all the traditional spaces like the lid, cheeks, and lips, pink also made an appearance on some by softly blooming out from the temple. Our favourite? Lorde’s ever-so-subtle flush of colour on her lids and temples which was perfectly executed by Kiwi makeup maven Amber.D.
2. Facial Bedazzling
Makeup artists really went all out this year, opting for a 3D approach to makeup. We saw pearls in lieu of eye liner on actress Storm Reid, and the jewel was also applied to musician Grimes who used them to accentuate her brows. Model Ella Emhoff opted for dainty gemstone detailing around her eyes, poet Amanda Gorman had a statement sparkly stripe of jewels across her face, while actress Julia Garner matched a trio of rhinestones in the inner corners of her eyes (and more in a winged formation from the outer corners) to her glittering silver gown. Even Lil Nas X had gold accents strategically placed at the edge of his eyes.
3. Sculptural Hair
It’s hard to find the words to describe some of the exquisite hair styles we saw today, other than to say they were sculptural delights. Our favourites included the stacked bun on Venus Williams, Lupita Nyong’o’s asymmetric afro (a real work of art), Naomi Osaka’s gravity defying horizontally stretched style, and actress Maisie Williams’ slick lacquer-look. To a lesser extent, Kristen Stewart displayed a quiffed ponytail, and Megan Fox showcased a bold statement power fringe.
We’ve been seeing coloured eyeshadow for some time now, so it’s no surprise it was out in full force at the Met Gala. Camila Cabello went for a two-toned shade of ultra violet, while Gigi Hadid’s powder blue shadow showed no colour was off-limits. We particularly appreciated Diane Kruger’s kaleidoscope coloured eyes.
5. Old Hollywood Glamour
Giving us a glimpse of old school glamour, Billie Eilish who is co-chair of the event, definitely had an air of Marilyn Monroe with her look. Serena Williams chose Hollywood waves, while Kaia Gerber (in a stunning Oscar de la Renta which served as a homage to Bianca Jagger), perfected the side parted finger waves shaped by hairstylist to the stars Guido Palau. But it wasn’t all about the hair, the classic red lip which was also perhaps a nod to the red stripes in the American flag, was popular with Karlie Kloss and Mexican actress Eiza González.
