Sylvester Sessions is the brainchild of Kate Sylvester – an interview series dedicated to talking to creative, interesting girls from New Zealand, Australia and the USA who love everything Sylvester. As an extension of the original idea Miss FQ had the opportunity to discover some beauties for Summer ’16.
First up is Emily Wells from Los Angeles, United States.
- Tell us, who are you and what do you do?
I’m a writer. I’m working on my first book of fiction and also write arts/culture journalism. I’ve also been a newspaper reporter, model, and ballet dancer — as Susan Sontag once put it, “I wanted every kind of life, and the writer’s life seemed most inclusive.”
- What do you love most about yourself?
My empathy. My life is largely a quest to connect with and understand others.
- What is your favourite thing about where you’re from?
Being in LA challenges me to be a bit more positive and to live vibrantly. In New York, people are more like me — sarcastic, a bit uptight, moving too quickly. LA has taught me to calm down.
- How would you describe your style?
I always prioritize what is interesting over what is fashionable. My style inspiration comes from looking at women I admire (Sontag and Didion’s polished yet casual style, big sweaters and little makeup) or art I find beautiful. I also love the fashion of French New Wave films and the icons of the 60’s and 70’s – Anna Karina and Jane Birkin especially.
