As the sun-drenched days of summer beckon, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the unveiling of I Love Ugly’s High Summer collection, curated under the creative expertise of Auckland-based womenswear designer, Alice Isles. Stepping into her role at I Love Ugly (ILU) earlier this year, Alice brings a wealth of experience from her dynamic journey in the fashion industry. Prior to joining ILU, she co-owned the hej hej for five years – a venture that recently concluded its final chapter in early November 2023. Her portfolio includes stints with renowned brands such as Marcs and Sportscraft during her time in Australia.

The High Summer collection is not only a testament to Isles’ keen design sensibilities but also marks a significant milestone as her inaugural contribution to I Love Ugly’s womenswear. Isles played a pivotal role in shaping the collection, not only as a designer but also as a key member of the creative team alongside brand coordinator Sam and menswear designer Judd. Together, they meticulously crafted moodboards, conceptualised the campaign, and orchestrated model castings to bring the vision to life.

As the creative force behind the scenes on the High Summer collection, which took place at the iconic Parnell Baths, Isles took on the multifaceted responsibilities of briefing hair and make-up, styling models, and collaborating with the photographer. The result is a collection that not only embodies I Love Ugly’s distinct aesthetic but also reflects Isles’ unique perspective and innovative design approach. Below, we speak to the designer on her favourite seasonal selects, emerging trends, and which colours to be seen in.

In conversation with ILU womenswear designer Alice Isles

Can you give us an overview of the concept and inspiration behind your high summer campaign? What was the vision?

Summer is the perfect season to play with colour and test new silhouettes. My vision was to follow in the footsteps of the mens collection creating premium pieces that are super versatile. This is my first drop as the new womenswear designer, I really wanted to introduce some fun colours pops and textures to the collection.

What was the thought process behind choosing the location or backdrop for the campaign shoot, and how does it tie into the collection’s theme?

Parnell Baths is an iconic Auckland spot and we wanted to use the contrasting colours and mid-century vibe as a backdrop. ILU always inspired but architecture and Parnell baths have some cool shapes and colours.

What are the key silhouettes or styles that we can expect to see in this high summer collection? What materials or textiles have you used and why?

We have done lots of matching sets for our Summer Collection. I love the way a set is so versatile, my favourite is the new Munroe crochet mini skirt and top. You can wear them together for summer events and then wear them as separates for more casual look.

Can you describe the dominant colours/prints and their significance in this season’s designs?

The dominant pop colour is smokey blue, and we have some pops of bright green. All styled back with our core neutrals like off white and black. We are excited to introduce some more colour to the collection. Summer is the perfect season to push your boundaries and wear fun colours.

ILU Utility wrap skirt styled with a mens cuban shirt.
ILU Hope gathered top styled with the linen Xander pant.

On the topic of styling our outfits for summer. What accessories or footwear can we anticipate seeing paired with the clothing in the ILU collection?

Because we are shooting poolside, we have lots of chunky sandal options. I sourced an amazing pair of Jil Sander beaded slides that I am really excited to shoot. Also can’t go past a clean Asics sneakers with a pop of green which ties in with the collection.

Another key styling element for summer, we have introduce some unisex festive inspired crossbody bags and a swim tote. I will be using these all summer, they look so minimal and clean.

Can you highlight any emerging trends that are central to your high summer collection?

I love using the mens collection alongside women’s pieces. I have styled some of the lace mens Cubans shirts with our mini skirts. Its fun to create mix and match mens and womens together and use oversized pieces.

Which items will you most likely be wearing on repeat this summer?

I am wearing the Arlo crochet set all summer, I love the charcoal colour and oversized fit. Its an easy way to look put together without trying…. Also super excited for Hope asymmetric top which was styled with baggy clean carpenter menswear short.

In terms of sizing and inclusivity, how have you considered different body types in your designs?

We run XS-XXL in our women’s collection and believe we have something to offer a wide variety of customers.
