Nobody does glamour, or drama, quite like the Italians. There was no shortage of either at Milan Fashion Week, thanks to shows from the likes of Prada, Missoni, Versace, and Fendi. The later two designers even teamed up to create “Fendace”, a joint show that saw the creative directors Kim Jones and Donatella Versace take the reins to design for each other’s brands.
Read on for FQ’s round-up of styling tips spotted on the runways, and discover some experimental ways to add some extra fun to your look.
1. Loosen up
Missoni sent painterly shirts down the runway with just a single button fastened, making for a peek-a-boo moment that’s not for the faint hearted. Although we see this styling trick working equally as well with a bikini or one-piece swimsuit layered underneath—for a fresh approach to seaside cover-ups.
2. Hold me close
The decadent, disco-inspired looks at Fendi were topped off with evening bags cradled under the wrist. Although not entirely practical, clutching your bag from the bottom is a surefire way to look chic next time a photo op arises on a special occasion.
3. Twisted fantasy
Adding a scarf around the neck is the oldest trick in the book for instant polish and MM6 Maison Margiela’s sculptural take provides plenty of necktie inspiration. Experiment with artful twisting next time your outfit needs a little extra lift.
4. The long and the short of it
The Jil Sander show was a lesson in thoughtful layering. Although a dress and tailored pants may initially feel like a bit of a daunting duo, don’t be afraid to experiment with contrast. Layering a feminine dress over sharp trousers is a modern way to dress for after-dark.
5. Layer cake
With a show that simultaneously took place in Milan and Shanghai, Prada explored a modern take on sensuality this season. Play on texture and clash soft spring knitwear with a slinky slip skirt—after all, opposites attract.
6. Colour theory
Versace sure know how to do va-va-voom, providing a formula for colour blocking that feels super fresh. Don’t feel restricted to a harmonious array of tones, instead, get playful with a kaleidoscope of colours that suit your mood.
