She’s walked the runway with Karl Lagerfeld, counts Carine Roitfeld as a mentor and once dreamed of becoming a fashion editor in New York. Meet Soo Joo Park, the new SJP…
There’s nothing like a good-old style stalk and Soo Joo Park is currently sitting at the top of our click list. The South Korean-born, New York-dwelling model is a fixture on international street-style round-ups, a global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris and she has just been named the face of MIMCO’s new collection, The Atomic Ranger. While in Melbourne shooting her latest campaign, we quizzed the platinum beauty on her eclectic style, shopping haunts and jet-setting essentials.
HER FASHION NICHE
I love experimenting and trying new things. [When accessorising] I always have my go-to favourites that are simple. But if I have more time to get dressed I look for unexpected combinations, mixing high and low, and seeing things that seem to clash but actually work. I’m a visual person and I love browsing old fashion magazines and film and art archives for new inspiration.
FAVOURITE SHOPPING HOT SPOTS
I love shopping in vintage stores in LA and consignment shops around New York and Paris. They have tonnes of beautiful pieces that are unique and special.
RECENT SPLURGE
It’s actually not fashion, but I did spend an embarrassing amount on a diamond facial at spa L. Raphael while I was at the Hotel Martinez in Cannes! Oops.
ON KOREAN STYLE
Because I travel to Seoul often for jobs, up to five or six times a year, I am pretty well caught up with Korean fashion and beauty. At the moment they are obsessed with dewy skin, chocolatey auburn hair and scalp massage!
TRAVEL ESSENTIALS
I take scented candles for when I check into my hotel and a nice silk or cashmere scarf that can double as a blanket on board my flight.
ACCESSORY CRUSH
Some of MIMCO’s jewellery and bags with khaki colours and a utilitarian vibe from The Atomic Ranger collection really stood out to me. I also absolutely love the upcoming Downtime collection which features pieces in really beautiful turquoise and coral colours. It feels very California-inspired.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Becoming the first Asian-American to represent L’Oréal Paris is a major benchmark, but I’ll always cherish opening the Chanel Cruise collection in Seoul and walking the finale with Karl [Lagerfeld] and Hudson [Kroenig – Lagerfeld’s six-year-old godson].
