The spring jewellery trends you definitely need to put on your radar

The right jewellery can add that final finishing touch to your outfit, to make it just *so*. But where to begin?

You’ve got it all. The perfect outfit, a fresh ‘do and some fancy footwear. The pièce de résistance? A fine or fun piece of jewellery to pull the whole look together. This season there are several trends you can opt for when it comes to accessorising with jewellery; some classic and some more ‘of-the-moment’. Both will literally transform your outfits – you just need to know where to start.

Here we look to the runways and break down our top tips to ensure your jewellery (and you!) really shine this spring:

BALMAINNECKLACE

LONG NECKLACES

Bye bye chunky chokers, right now it’s all about the sautoir or longer chain necklaces as seen at Balmain, Tom Ford and Wanda Nylon. Typically a fine chain set with jewels or tassels, go for a 2017 twist on the traditional sautoir and instead opt for feathers, dreamcatchers or medallions which add a whimsical and slightly romantic touch to a more structured outfit. Case in point: Team with a plunging neckline – perhaps a buttoned-up blazer worn without anything underneath – for a sophisticated evening look.

MIX AND MATCH METALS

Gone are the days of wearing one metal and one metal only. Gold, silver, rose gold, hammered, polished… Rip up the rule book and stack together different colours and finishes for a look that is truly unique to you. Everybody’s doing it – from Margiela to Dior.

STATEMENT EARRINGS

Oversized look-at-me earrings aren’t going anywhere this season and were a key look at Proenza Schouler, Balenciaga and Kenzo to name just three. To really nail the look, keep the rest of your outfit simple (we’re talking jeans, tees and other basics here) and let the earrings make the bold statement for you. Extra points if they’re similar to this season’s graphic geometric styles seen at the likes of Balenciaga and Isabel Marant.

LAYER NECKLACES

It might seem simple but there really is an art when it comes to layering necklaces. Depending on the look you’re going for (and the style of necklaces you’re layering) two or three necklaces is usually a good place to start. A more delicate chain and pendant will look pretty alongside another delicate pendant on a longer chain, such as the example at Dior AW 17, but don’t be afraid to mix pendant sizes and even metals. Keep the look tidy by going for a gradual effect in chain length or go for an element of surprise by wearing the layered necklaces in reverse, teamed with a backless dress or top.

TORY BURCH

ADD A WATCH

Your look isn’t really complete if you haven’t added a watch to your outfit. An investment piece through and through, owning the right watch is a simple and sophisticated way to update your outfit, add instant polish and show you mean business. Leather strap styles are having a moment right now (as seen at Emporio Armani and Tory Burch) but rose gold styles are still very popular and are perfect for both day and night.

EAR PARTY

Multiple piercings and varying earring designs all worn together are still very much a trend going into summer. “Style” your ears by mixing your earrings – blending the likes of ear jackets, ear climbers, threads, bar studs, duo studs and ear swings – and don’t be afraid to mismatch. One earring in one ear, two in the other. Or a statement earring on the right side and three delicate bar studs in the other. The point here is to be playful and create your own brand of #earspo. We’re loving the fun ear cuff styles seen at Dion Lee and Christian Siriano.
