There was something different about the L’Oréal Paris runway in Sydney last week. Held at the Overseas Passenger Terminal the event made history as the brand’s first-ever Australian runway which housed over 250 guests. We saw a range of inspiring Australian women, but like any Kiwi we felt most excited to see some New Zealanders on the runway. Enter content creator Riley Hemson (originally from Wellington, now residing in Australia) who swapped the camera for the catwalk in a stunning Mariam Seddiq black structured ensemble. Known for her authentic voice and empowering message around body positivity Riley embodied confidence as she walked alongside top models and industry icons. FQ got an exclusive post-interview with her to ask all about the evening, her favourite fashion designers, and authenticity.
How does it feel to have walked in the L’Oréal Paris runway show in Sydney? Was this a lifelong dream, or did it come as an unexpected opportunity?
Walking in the L’Oréal Paris runway show feels surreal. It’s such a significant moment for me, not just as a model but as someone who wants to inspire others to embrace who they are. While I wouldn’t say it was a lifelong dream, it certainly feels like a dream come true—one of those unexpected opportunities that makes you realise how far you’ve come.
What were your thoughts when you first found out you’d be walking the runway?
I was honestly a mix of excited and nervous. L’Oréal’s message of worth aligns so well with my views and values so having the opportunity to come together along with so many incredibly inspiring women felt like a pinch me moment.
L’Oréal Paris is known for championing diversity and self-expression. How do you connect with this ethos as both a model and content creator?
It’s something I try to embody in everything I do. As a model, it’s important to show that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and as a content creator, I use my platform to share an authentic journey, encouraging others to embrace themselves fully. It’s about showing up as I am and helping others feel empowered to do the same.
Can you tell us about your runway outfit and beauty look? What makes it unique to you?
My runway look was Mariam Seddiq. A powerhouse of a woman. I feel the look aimed to highlight both strength and elegance. The outfit was bold and structured but still feminine, making me feel powerful as I walked. For glam the initial plan was beach glam but I felt I needed to be more strong, bold and sexy—so we went with a Smokey eye.
As someone with a large online following, how does it feel to step into the fashion world in a more traditional sense as a runway model?
It feels like a full-circle moment. I’ve been sharing my journey online for a while, but I love stepping onto the runway —it is different; it’s more vulnerable in some ways. But it’s also an amazing opportunity to show that beauty extends beyond the digital space into the real world.
How do you balance authenticity within the world of fashion and beauty?
For me, authenticity is non-negotiable. In fashion and beauty, there’s a lot of pressure to conform, but I’ve always tried to stay true to myself and my message. If something doesn’t feel right, I won’t do it. I believe that being authentic is what resonates with people, and it’s what has allowed me to have a genuine connection with my community.
Have you received any advice from other models or industry professionals along the way?
Yes, the best advice I’ve received is to just be yourself and trust the process. It’s easy to get caught up in trying to fit into what you think the industry wants, but the truth is, the industry is evolving, and being true to yourself is the most valuable asset you can have.
What does walking the runway mean for you personally?
It’s more than just a runway walk; it’s about standing in my power and showing that beauty isn’t one-dimensional. It means being proud of who I am and representing women who may not always see themselves on a runway. It’s a statement of self-worth and confidence.
You recently attended Paris Fashion Week, tell us what was the highlight?
It was my first time attending Paris Fashion Week, and it was an incredible experience. The highlight was definitely being surrounded by so much creativity and seeing how fashion continues to evolve. There was an energy there that was so inspiring.
How would you describe your personal style?
I love to experiment with unique pieces and shapes. Clothes are clothes, we take them off at the end of the day. I think I’d give almost anything a go! I want to feel powerful and cool in whatever I wear. My day to day definitely leans more to comfort and practicality though!
What’s next for you after the runway show? Any new projects you’re working on?
The past year I’ve been on a running journey which has been very fun to document and share with my community – so I’m working on something there. I also spend a lot of time working on my brand REMMIE, we have a bunch of new collections coming, delving into an entirely new space with a new line launching soon AND our first collab collection next year which I’m so excited about.
If you had to describe your L’Oréal Paris runway experience in three words, what would they be?
Empowering, inspiring, and unforgettable.
What is your favourite L’Oréal Paris product and why?
The L’Oréal Paris True Match Foundation is a fab product! It was the first foundation I ever bought! It gives me a natural glow while still providing enough coverage to even out my skin tone, which is perfect for everyday wear or when I’m in front of the camera.
What is the fashion brand or designer you like to wear the most?
Aside from REMMIE hehe (I live in our soft girl sets), I love mixing high fashion with accessible pieces. But when it comes to designers, Jean Paul Gaultier has always been a favorite of mine. His pieces are fun, quirky and sexy. The brands ethos and message aligns with my values also! They’re super inclusive and never take life too seriously.
