Alana Clarke - Lana Boutique

The owner of fashion hotspot Lana Boutique says she’s been obsessed with style since she was a toddler.

With gorgeous collections from designers like Bec & Bridge, One Teaspoon, Saben and Maurie & Eve lining the walls, Auckland’s Lana Boutique has become a go-to fashion stop in the trendy Takapuna. Owner Alana Clarke talks to Cleo about why she loves her job.

What sparked your love of fashion?

According to my mum I was always fussy about how I dressed and had to have everything co-ordinated right from the age of three!

What’s your education/career background?

At university I gained a business degree majoring in marketing and finance and my job during this time was in fashion retail. Moochi was a great company to work for and I learnt so much as I did later with Trelise Cooper.

I also worked as a marketing executive in travel and hospitality but realised while travelling, how totally absorbed I was in the streets of Paris, London and New York and knew then I should follow my heart.

Why did you open Lana Boutique?

I felt there was a real gap in the market for exclusive yet affordable clothing and footwear on the North Shore. The trendy McKenzies precinct in Takpapuna provided the perfect location to open in late 2013.

What’s the coolest thing about your job?

Coming to work everyday and seeing the smile on my clients’ faces when I find the perfect outfit for them. Also personally selecting from the ranges in Sydney and Melbourne. And of course, attending New Zealand Fashion Week is always a highlight.

Who are your favourite designers?

Bec & Bridge and Maurie & Eve which I am very proud to stock and I will always lust over the likes of Isabel Marant. Helmut Lang and of course the iconic Chanel.

What would we find if we had a peek through your handbag?

An iPhone 6, Louis Vuiton wallet, Chanel compact, mac lipstick, Lucas Paw Paw, Mini Sebastian hairpsray, Servilles personalised notebook and a variety of clothing tags!

What are your workplace wardrobe staples?

In summer a fitted dress, Senso heels and a blazer. In winter I will wear tailored black pants a new season top and either stilettos or boots.

What trends do you love this season?

White on white, sequins and embellishment, cut-outs, stripes and denim – all with a feminine edge.

What was your last clothing purchase?

A beautiful silk top to go with my limited edition Winona sequin shorts to wear on New Year’s Eve

What are your future plans for Lana Boutique and your career?

First of all I want to continue to extend the limited edition designers so that there is always plenty of choice for everyone. There are lots of exciting things in the pipeline this year… watch this space…
