Tried and tested: how Miele’s appliances help our editor-at-large tackle her laundry pile.

A lot changes once you have kids. There is the sleepless nights and the juggling of a career with motherhood , but what I really wasn’t prepared for was the unconquerable mountains of washing. Fortunately for me, a godsend from Miele, the purveyor of the world’s leading appliances, arrived just in time to prevent the insurmountable sea of washing from swallowing my house whole.

My life may be a little more chaotic now but I’ve always been time-poor. Doing the washing, or, even worse, getting to a dry cleaner has always been an inconvenience. Nor am I the only person familiar with reaching for washing powder only to discover our partner or housemate has used the last drop.

Much to my delight, Miele makes this conundrum a thing of the past with its TwinDos system. The in-built, automatic-dispensing detergent system is a game changer: all you have to do is throw your washing in, select your cycle — if you get stuck, Miele will help you out here, too — and you’re ready to go. There’s no messy measuring of liquids or powders, as Miele removes all the guesswork.

I’m impressed by how intuitive the machines are. The amount of water and detergent used is based on load to minimise wastage. Miele considers the soil level, weight of garments, and programmes selected to create a completely customised wash cycle.

If you don’t want your washing sitting for hours after it’s finished, you can use the Miele app to check in on your washing or drying and schedule a start time or finish time. It’s convenient without fault.

Miele’s laundry appliances aren’t only for those with a hectic schedule, though; it’s evident Miele has a deep understanding of how important having the ability to care for your most cherished garments at home is. There’s a wash and dry cycle for all attire imaginable.

I’m conservative when putting anything in the washing machine and dryer — knitwear is sparingly hand-washed, and delicates and silks head off to the dry cleaner. However, Miele’s washing and drying programmes cater to some of the most difficult-to-wash-and-dry fabrics. There’s no need to worry about my woollen jumpers shrinking and becoming unwearable. I’m amazed by just how gentle the washer and dryer are on my clothes — and, with cycles like ‘minimal iron’, I find myself reaching for the iron much less frequently.

Investing in the right laundry appliances that last a lifetime is the next step in a journey towards a more sustainable, planet-friendly lifestyle. We can curate a sustainably minded wardrobe, but, at the end of the day, if our laundry appliances damage our garments, limiting the number of times we can wear them, it somewhat defeats the purpose.

With a 10-star energy-efficiency rating on the dryer, I don’t feel guilty about running it frequently — or concerned about my power bill. I can finally see my laundry floor again — and I have the confidence to wear what I like and throw it in the Miele machines without a second thought. Garments I’ve hesitated to wear due to their finicky upkeep have been given a second lease on life with Miele.
