If you've arrived for commentary on the historical equestrian sport of Polo, alas you won't find it here. What to wear, however? Now, that's an area we'd be willing to bring you up to speed on.

With a heritage steeped in prestige, navigating the Polo dress code requires a balance between classic and contemporary elements. From chic dresses and stylish hats to subtle jewellery and comfortable yet refined footwear, the polo dress code for women offers a canvas for expressing personal style while respecting the event’s refined atmosphere.

Below, we recap the dos and don’ts for dressing for the Polo, including our favourite seasonal selection of what to wear.

The dos and don'ts for dressing for the Polo

Do opt for sophisticated and elegant attire. Choose dresses, jumpsuits, or separates with modern silhouettes, relaxed tailoring, or interesting details.

Don’t wear anything casual like denim, shorts (unless they’re a tailored culotte style with a co-ordinating top), dresses made from jersey or anything too elasticated. Nor anything that’s too revealing. This is a classy affair and we want you to feel the part.

Do embrace colour and prints so long as they’re somewhat pastel or muted. Ensure they’re appropriate for summer i.e. in cotton or linen fabrications. We love a vintage stripe or timeless rendition of an English rose pattern.

Don’t wear overly bright or flashy colours unless the event has a specific theme.

Do consider wearing a stylish hat – it is a classic accessory for polo events. Choose one that complements your outfit and adds a touch of glamour. In doubt? You can’t go wrong with a natural handwoven style.

Don’t go for an oversized or elaborate hat that may obstruct views for others. And as tempting as it is to wear your race-day fascinator, this is also not the place. Try a headband or ornate hair clip instead.

Do opt for stylish and comfortable shoes, as polo events often involve walking on grass. Flats, sandals, or low-heeled shoes are good choices.

Don’t wear stiletto heels. You will sink into the field and miss out on the opportunity to divot stomp. And please avoid overly casual footwear like sneakers or flip-flops. Another Polo no-no. Espadrille wedges are a popular option, otherwise regular wedges/heeled slides or block-heels will work.

Do reach for your understated and elegant jewellery. A simple necklace, bracelet, or earrings can add a touch of sophistication. Avoid excessive or overly flashy jewellery that may distract from the overall ensemble.

Don’t bring your everyday carry-all. Opt for a small, chic handbag or clutch that complements your outfit. It should be large enough to carry essentials but not overly bulky.

Do select your sunglasses wisely. Modern silhouettes that complement your facial shape can completely make your look. Plus, they’re practical too.

Don’t overlook sun protection. Apply sunscreen throughout the day to protect your skin and keep under the shade where possible, especially during peak heat. Similar to a day at the races, the Polo is an endurance sport for fashionistas.

Do keep your grooming impeccable. Well-coiffed hair and subtle makeup can enhance your overall look. Anything too heavy should be reserved for evening events. You want something that’s easy to maintain all day.

Don’t trust the forecast. We always advise you bring a stylish jacket, linen blazer, or shawl that complements your outfit should the weather turn or you don’t have access to shade.

Do remain polite and respectful to fellow attendees. Polo matches often have a social element, and good manners contribute to a positive atmosphere.
