It’s out with the old and in with the oversized. These are the work to weekender bags our editors suggest you add to cart.

In case you missed the memo in our 2023 top trend round up, the oversized bag trend shows no sign of slowing. Since the ‘ludicrously capacious bag’ was coined on HBO’s show Succession last year (in reference to Burberry’s Vintage Check Leather Satchel bag, no less) it seems that just about every major designer has featured an edit of supersized carry-all bags in their recent collections.

Despite our penchant for a pint-sized purse or micro bag, we can’t deny sheer practicality of an extra large bag. With most of us returning to regular programming and in need of back-to-work inspiration, now seems like an opportunistic time to invest in a capacious tote befitting of your laptop, lunch and other work essentials. And if you’re one of those lucky people who happens to be jet-setting around the globe right now, we’re pleased to say they also make ideal travel carry-on companions.

Scroll on to discover eight oversized bags that our editors suggest you add to cart, pronto.

8 oversized bags to shop this season

  1. Yu Mei Teresa Tote, $1259

Spacious, sleek and tremendously soft (courtesy of premium New Zealand deer nappa), Yu Mei’s Teresa tote is a stylish and fuss-free option for the practical woman. With enough space to fit a 15-inch laptop and all your necessities, we adore this bag as an everyday carryall. Did we mention it comes in six different shades?

2. YSL ICARE Maxi shopping bag, $7105

It may be called a shopping bag, but we wouldn’t suggest carrying your groceries in this luxury tote. Crafted from a quilted nappa leather, this style is a must have for those who lean into a more flamboyant aesthetic.

3. Bottega Veneta Hop Large Intrecciato-leather shoulder bag, $5374

You can’t go past Bottega when it comes to oversized bags. Featuring the iconic weave that the brand is known for, this jumbo ‘Hop’ style perfectly encapsulates quiet luxury. Favoured by fashion It-girls everywhere, those in the mood to splurge should definitely consider this classic style.

4. Saben Roma Carryall, $629

If travel is on the cards for you any time soon, a carry-all bag is always a suitable companion to your suitcase. Available in plush pink or black, Saben’s Roma bag is our flight-friendly bag of choice.

5. Deadly Ponies Phantom Duffle maxi, $1499

Complete with a detachable shoulder strap, this understated unisex duffle bag is an ideal choice for those on the go. Whether you’re heading away for the weekend or simply in search of a new everyday bag, its classic design will not only last the test of time in your wardrobe but also get better with age.

6. The Row XL Idaho tote, $3307

Make like an Olsen sister with one of The Row’s oh-so-large and oh-so-luxe XL totes. This long, lean bag comes in a short and succinct option of colourways: green or black. We will leave it with you to decide.

7. Victoria Beckham The Jumbo tote, $3250, from Muse

If there’s one woman we trust to make a good oversized bag, it’s Victoria Beckham. Designed to fit all your basics and then some, The Jumbo features adjustable straps and leather-covered snap buttons for two-way folding, easily expanding or contracting to meet your needs.

8. Aje Maisie Logo Raffia Beach tote, $340

Want something more on the casual side? There are few bags as timeless as a raffia tote, which are just as suitable for the beach as they are for the everyday. Since it’s summer time in New Zealand, why not try dabbling with a more relaxed oversized style such as this before taking the leap with a more sizeable investment.
